Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club festival X1 v all comers on Sun 12 Sep 2004 at
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won
Match report
The second annual Gidea Park & Romford Festival, sponsored by cricket equipment suppliers Cricket House, was held at Gallows Corner on Sunday 12 September. It was a fitting close to the season and enjoyable. In addition to the hosts, the participating clubs were Ardleigh Green, Harold Wood, Rainham and Upminster; Hornchurch scratched at the last minute as they could not raise a team.
The format of 11 aside, 8 overs a team, 1 over per bowler and batsmen retire at 25 made for a fast moving series of matches played on both squares at Gallows. Harold Wood set out their stall in the first match when they comfortably beat Ardleigh Green, the 2003 champions, by 12 runs, and they proceeded to remain unbeaten, defeating Upminster by 8 wickets, Gidea Park by 20 runs and Rainham by 48 runs. They were worthy winners with consistent batting (Dave Hollingsworth to the fore) and accurate bowling. Ardleigh Green won their three other matches to be runners up, followed by Gidea Park, then Upminster and Rainham. Spare a thought for Rainham, the minnows of the competition, who did not win a match but competed well and in good humour!
All participants were well served by the hosts throughout the day through the hard working catering team and club members umpiring, and Upminster and Ardleigh Green provided umpiring abd scoring support, for which many thanks were expressed. The weather remained fine and we look forward to the 3rd festival on the same weekend in 2005.
