Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v OLD PARKONIANS 3RD on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 1pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 20pts
Match report
"COME AS YOU ARE, as you were, as I want you to be" Come on time would be a good start. Park were all on time and raring to go at 1pm. Unfortunately Old Park's only numbered the club chairman at the time who had asked us to bat.
The flowers were certainly IN BLOOM and playing havoc with my heyfever as Matty Brett aged 14, and Ammar Zahid aged 18ish walked out to open and made a prompt start. Ammar fell for 5 which pitched Ashu Dabhi aged 18, to the crease. Matty continue to play fine shots ON A PLAIN looking wicket. Again this young gent showed what a talented cricketeer he is as he knocked up 74. Give it a year and some growth these 70's will be 100's i'm sure.
Ashu, playing his first league game of the season made hey at the other end whilst Pasola, aged older than all them, made 17 off six deliveries, probably dreaming ABOUT A GIRL. Hafiz Ali, returning after absence, clubbed a quick 60 leaving the skipper with a dillema of when to declare. Finally with Ashu 114 not out and Hafiz 60 the innings was closed on 300 - 3 off 43 overs.
Ashu is another fine cricketer, with the bat, and in the field, he tells me he can bowl spin, we'll have to wait and see.
Whilst SIFTING through the sandwiches for the rarest ham on brown and white bread the chat amoungst the team mainly came from Baljit and was directed at the eating contest between Pasola and Ali. Just like with the bat Ali got more.
The Old Park's innings started with the news that Hafiz had to leave at six, to pay his respects to a departed friend. This brings a pinch of reality to the game of cricket and shows us its not everything.
Aaron opened coming down the hill with a terrific spell of bowling and quickly claimed his first wicket. Hafiz then came up the hill and claimed his first of 4 wickets. Aaron was replaced by Baljit who bowled a spell but unfortunately was punished for dropping a little too short.
James Pegram, aged 16, replaced Baljit and bowled very well yet again. Having taken a superb catch at second slip to remove the Old Parks chairman he then proceeded to hit the next batsman in front of all three stumps, whilst most of the Gidea boys were appealling the ball slowly rolled into off stump and knocked the bail off!
Two and a half hours fielding can really DRAIN YOU, however the Park fielding was excellent and Jamie Skeels , aged 14, took his first wicket in adult cricket with Matty Brett taking his second catch behind the stumps. This occured in the first over of the last 20. Three wickets to take for victory, Dave Cobill, aged 60+, claimed a wicket from his 7 overs as the batsmen gloved one to slip, Zahid with the catch. Aaron then popped up with a very straight one that gave the umpire an easy decision to make. But the rest of the OLd Park's side stood firm through a Baljit short ball festival, and Cobill's slow left arm.
The last pair came together on the 16th over and were still there going into the 20th. Cobill was due to take it but asked the simple question to the skipper "what do you want to do?".
Having watched the bus being Parked in front of the stumps, I decided to bowl the last over. My 2nd over in 9 years. Last time I took a wicket was for Ambleside 2nd XI whilst at University in 2000. Ashu complained that his spin talents were going to waste. First ball was taken behind by the keeper, 2nd was a foot wide down the leg side and the third was nicely spooned to gully for James Pegram to take the match winning catch.
This prompted mild hilarity from all and, personally I've not stopped smiling yet.
The Park side played fantastically from start to finish, it was a real team effort and everyone contributed with bat, ball or in the field. Giving the age of the side it certainly SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT.
