Fives & Heronians v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 21 Aug 2004 at 11.00am
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
A match where the toss of the coin was always going to prove to vital to the overall result saw Park lose a poor game of cricket. Not starting till 2pm with the wicket still very much favoring the side winning the toss Park were asked to bat first. With acurate bowling scoring proved almost impossible from one end . Overall 15 of the 18 wickets to fall fell at the end which it would be fair to say had either team been asked to bat first was a mockery. The game went ahead in the interest of the game and it would be fair to say whoever one the game would be more than happy with the reult knowing the losing side were always going to be low collectors of points.
Park lost easy wickets at times and were not disciplined enough to graft out a total, collapsing to 77 all out and handing Fives viital extra overs ( 7 in total) to achieve a score which was not far short of a winning score.
The trend of wickets to fall from end continued and Fives too were soon struggling. Davey cliaming both early wickets. Park then dropped 2 catches which in the context and time and degree of difficulty to score played a major part in the result. Having finally dismissed both Whorlow 23 and Stevens 19, who added a match winning partnership of a massive 33 Park saw a glimmer of hope and were always as much in the game as their oppo, but it was not to be as Bhome and Coleman saw them home for an extremely important result. Park bowled and fielded with much determination anda never say die atitude Collard 3-22 Berry 2-18 and Davey 2-24
With one end returning analysis of 37 overs 15 maidens 67 runs 15 wickets and 16 scores below 9 with extras topping 22 out of a total of 155 runs it would be wise to think that the wicket played a far too important factor in a result which once again could have huge consequences. Having said all that it would be fair to say that either team having started the game would have fancied their chances to get a much needed result amd would have been pleased with the result if it went for them at the end of the game. The game was played in good competitive spirit but at the final result with the game going to the penultimate over of which Park conceeded 5 extra overs to their opponents we were disappointed with the way in which we failed to adapt better to the situation we were given first up
