Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v OLD PARKONIANS on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
This was the first league match on the second square at Gallows Corner for three weeks after the drenching the ground has had from the weather and we welcomed old Parkonians 3rd XI for the first time. The pitch and outfield were naturally slow in the circumstances, but Park won the toss and elected to bat. The Old Parkonians opening attack bowled accurately and reduced Park to 13 for 2, Ashu Dhabi playing too early at one ball and then a very good one accounting for the in-form Ammar Zahid. Harvir Jutla played soundly in an unaccustomed role of opener but was bowled for 24 with the score on 48, and in fairly short order this became 85 for 7 after 34 overs as the Old Parkonians attack, with three wickets for young leg spinner Vijayanathan who returned 3 for 28, continued to bowl well and to their field. Brijsh Patel was batting well however and with great consideration of shot selection and when he was joined by Hafiz Ali the pair soon accelerated the total with some good shots and quick running. They added 48 before Brijesh was out for an excellent 53 to the returning opening bowler Bharuchi, who added a further wicket for figures of 3 for 39 off 12 overs. Hafiz continued to bat positively and before he was well caught by the 'keeper for 43 containing one 6, one 5 and four 4s, the last two wickets adding 25, but crucially Park were all out for 158, about 20 short of a truly competitve total, with four of the 52 overs still remaining and this was to prove crucial at the end of the day. One curiousity in the innings was a five run penalty when the ball hit the helmet stationed behind the 'keeper!
By the time Old Parkonians commenced their innings the ground conditions had eased and whilst still slow were more conducive to run scoring. Park's opening attack of Hafiz Ali and Jakk Carver both produced good accurate bowling though and only 15 runs came off the first 12 overs for the loss of one wicket, a great stop and return from Harvir Jutla producing a run out. A second wicket followed when Hafiz bowled Kalley for 11 but at this point the 16 year olds Patel and Lee dug in and proceeded to bat very well indeed in the face of a probing spell from Abdul Zabwala's left arm spin. Both batsmen drove well down the ground and changes of bowling had no impact as they added 94 before Patel was very well held on the long on boundary by Baljit Jutla for 52. As so often happens Lee was out directly afterwards for 56, LBW to Brijesh Patel in his first spell of the season, to put the pressure back on the away side as they needed 19 off four overs. Park's only other success however was a further great pick up and diving run out by Abdul Zabwala to make the score 148 for 5 and the Old Boys got home with 7 balls to spare.
This was a disappointing result for a Park side with eight players under 19 who have started slowly this year, with the weather intervening too much for anyone to be really in form, but the teams in this division are closely matched and the next feww weeks should see an improvement.
Next week we are away to Billericay 3rds.
