ORSETT & THURROCK v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 31 May 2008 at 1PM
Match was Drawn

Match report A much stronger Park team than in previous weeks lost the toss on their first ever visit to Orsett 3rds on a damp, seaming pitch and in slow scoring damp conditions. The start was bright however with Craig Bray looking in good touch, but with the score on 31 he was run out on his own call after a misunderstanding with his opening partner. Thereafter both Suki Jutla and Ammar Zahid looked increasingly assured against a promising youthful Orsett seam attack and they started to take the game to the opposition, Ammar cracking two fine sttraight sixes and two other boundaries in his 37 out of a partnership of 69 for the second wicket. (With the very slow outfield bopundaries were at a premium for most of the period before tea while the outfield started to dry out.) Suki departed for a well made 53 (five fours) and had laid the foundation for a good total in the conditions, and Brijesh Patel and Harvir Jutla continued the good work in a stand of 74 for the 4th wicket, Brijesh compling a composed 52 and Harvir 27. Maximum batting points were achieved and a score of 202 was well above par for the conditions, an excellent effort.
After tea the conditions had eased considerably with the pitch slow and easy paced and outfield quicker, but the home team had limited ambitions and their progress was slow all innings. Park did themselves no favours with two dropped catches in the first three overs from Hafiz Ali, bowling with aggression, and the promising colt Jakk Carver. A breakthrough came after 12 overs when wicketkeeper Tommy Glanville snapped up two catches off Hafiz, the second a great diving effort, but from this point the game meandered along as the batsmen defended and the bowlers could not find a way through the defence of in particular young opener Seghal who scored a very correct and sound 37 at a run an over. Slow bowlers Abdul Zabwala and Dave Cobill nipped in with two wickets and one wicket respectively but three more dropped catches were very costly as Park's chances of winning a game they had dominated slipped away. Orsett had limited ambitions in the 51 overs they received from Park and played the game that suited their team make up but Park will look back on this game as 10 points lost (no win!) rather than 10 points gained for a draw.
However, it is early days with the amount of cricket played by everyone limited by the poor weather in the first four weeks of the league season, and there is plenty to play for. Next week it is Leigh on Sea 3rds at home.
