Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v ARDLEIGH GREEN on Sat 04 Aug 2007 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
At last a fine sunny day and with it a flat pitch at Gallows Corner for this local Derby. Park won the toss and chose to bowl and had immediate success when Andy Jenner had opener Patel caught behind in the second over. More success followed when Hafiz ali, who was to bowl an excellent spell that tested all the batsmen, had Doughty caught full stretch above his head at mid off by Dave cobill, and this of a very well hit drive! A couple of chances went begging but Hafiz had opposition skipper Alex surrey cayught behind and then Jenner struck twice more, once with a brilliant slip catch by Jas Chaggar and the other an LBW, to leave the innings in ruins at 42 for 5. This quickly became 66 for 6 after 29 overs when Mike O'Neil had another caught behind, and the youthful Matt Simmons and the rather older Geoff Robinson had to dig in, which they did to good effect, blocking solidly to regroup the innings. The pitch gave no help to the bowlers and there was no swing and the afternoon unfolded over after over with no attacking intentions from the batsmen. 11 overs produced 14 runs, and 24 overs only 41 runs as at the 52 over mark the score had only advanced to 107 for 6. A lengthy spell of slow bowling by Dave Cobill produced no change of approach in the batting, and further changes of bowler produced no significant change in the pattern of the game but bad deliveries were put away, and Simmons reached a hard fought 50 with a nice cover drive. The problem for Green was when to declare but this point was reached after 63 overs with the score on 167, after a stand of 101 which occupied 34 overs and had only one very difficult chance, with Simmons finishing 66 not out and Robinson 40 not out. This left Park just over an hour and 20 overs to get the runs. Park's fielding was very good despite the odd catching blemish, and the attack maintained pressure all innings. Hafiz Ali had 2 for 33 off 15 overs (and deserved more), Andy Jenner 3 for 23 off 13 overs and Mike O'Neil 1 for 20 off 8 overs.
Openers Jas chaggar and Ammar Zahid made steady progress against the left arm slows of John Doughty and the medium pace of Alex Surrey and they put on 46 in even time before Ammar was deceived and bowled by Doughty. Jerry Trayler fell to a lifting delivery (itself a surprise on such a blameless pitch) after another 30 runs were added, but the innings was well established and with Chaggar controlling one end and some powerful shots from Suki Jutla at the other end the score accelerated and Park ran out comfortable winners with two overs to spare. Jas continued his fine season with the bat finishing on 91 not out (11 fours and 1 six) and Suki continued his recent form with 51 not out (6 fours and 1 six). Full credit to Green for making this a hard fought match despite their low score and to both teams for a match played in excellent spirit, which has been a feature of Park's 4th XI matches so far this season.
