HAINAULT & CLAYHALL v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
Situation normal this week as Park skipper Andy Jenner lost the toss again and the home side elected to bat on a curious looking pitch which has seen one or two low scoring encounters this season. With a stiff breeze blowing across the pitch the opening bowlers struggled initially for rhythm but a change of ends produced immediate results when Mike O'Neil had Nick Whitehead caught by Hafiz Ali off a leading edge. The pitch was very slow and had erratic bounce, not dangerous but disconcerting at times, and this was exploited to the full by the Park attack who bowled good lines and lengths, backed by good fielding. Andy Jenner took the next wicket through a good catch by stand in 'keeper Suki Jutla to make it 33 for 2 and then proceeded to decimate the Hainault batting order with seam and swing, clean bowling three, having one LBW and two caught as the score subsided to 89 for 8, primary resistance coming from number three Khan with a dogged 33. The 9th wicket pair resisted stoutly but Park kept their patience and Dave Cobill nipped in with the breakthrough by having number 7 Thiara LBW for 27 and then Jenner rounded things off when number 11 Scott propped forward and was caught by the diving Hafiz Ali, the final score being an all out 122. The skipper recorded the outstanding figures of 27 overs 12 maidens and 8 wickets for 32 runs, and overall the attack performed well, O'Neil finishing with 1 for 32 and Cobill 1 for 9, backed by a good fielding and catching display in which Hafiz Ali and Jeff Thomas controlled the covers and colts Adam McKie and Chris Lamb played a full part.
Job half done but with the pitch as tricky as it was there was still a lot of hard work to do and the knowledge that Hainault have defended low scores this season. Jas Chaggar and Jeff Thomas played well in the opening stages adding 46 in 17 overs before Thomas was well held off a firm clip to mid wicket. At this point the home spinners Scott (very slow) and Bhardwaj (turn and bounce) were operating in tandem and they produced a great display with nothing loose, bowling accuratel and to their fields, resticting the batsmen to 14 runs in 16 overs and taking the further wicket of Chaggar for 20. It was sheer hard work as no chances could be taken with the pitch but Suki Jutla played a good, controlled innings and Jerry Trayler used his experience to take the opportunities that were there and gradually the score mounted and any threat from the bowling disapeared. Jutla was out with 13 needed for a well made 27 allowing Adam McKie to play one or two nice shots, before Trayler hit the winning boundary to finish 38 not out containing six 4s. Scott had excellent figures of 19 overs 8 maidens 1 for 20, and Bhardwaj 11 overs 6 maidens 1 for 14, proof of the dificulties posed by the bowlers on this pitch as Park needed 48 overs to get the win but with plenty of time to spare.
A well contested game played in good spirit that was a credit to both teams and a result that allowed Park to leapfrog over Hainault in the top four of the table. Next week it is a local Derby with Ardleigh Green.
