BASILDON & PITSEA v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Park opened their win account at Basildon in an entertaining match at Langdon Hills on a pitch with some pace and bounce and a fast, short boundary invoking fast scoring, fortunately missing all the rain that was about. Basildon won the toss and batted and were soon in disarray at 9 for 3 thanks to some incisive bowling by Hafiz Ali and a run out following good work by Amar Zahid. Enter Andrew Browne who proceeded to smash anything of whatever length in a powerful and at times unorthodox innings that was difficult to set a field to! He struck 10 fours and 4 sixes in scoring 80 and added 115 with Bowes, who compiled a much more sedate 38. Skipper Andy Jenner juggled the bowlers and had the reliable left arm spin of Dave Cobill operating at one end taking the pace off the ball to excellent efect. John Roberts broke the 4th wicket stand by bowling Bowes, and then Cobill (who had kept Browne quiet) gradually whittled away at the batting order aided by a fine boundary catch by Jeff Thomas and good bowling. Basildon recovered from 166 for 7 to 220 all out but this was below par for the conditions. Cobblers finished with the fine figures of 6 for 38 from 14 overs, supported by Ali with 2 for 61 (the figures do not do his spell justice!) and Roberts 1 for 36.
Left with plenty of time to get the runs but having an understrength batting line up, Park soon hit their straps with both Jas Chaggar and Amar Zahid taking the game to the bolwers. They were in fine form mixing drives and cut shots and half an hour before the 20 overs the score read 120 for no wicket - but that trapper of the unwary, the run out, intervened and Jas left for an excellent 63 (2 fours). Suki Jutla soon followed from a leading edge and then Zahid received one that crept and we were 129 for 3. Matt Sutton and Jeff Thomas reestablished things and then pushed the score on, the latter playing an elegant innings in his first apperarance for two years, and although thier was a wobble at 176 for 4 and 206 for 6, the result was not in doubt. Jeff capped a fine match for himself with 39 and the match finished with 5 overs to spare, Park victorious by 4 wickets. For Basildon both Thompson and Bowes bowled well at the death.
This win pushes Park up the table into the top four. Next week we travel to second placed Chelmsford.
