COLCHESTER & EAST ESSEX v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 May 2007 at 11.30AM
Match was Abandoned Abandoned as a draw
Match report
Colchester were asked to bat first and with some inspired bowling from Ammar Zaeem soon lost Russell lbw for 10. Zaeem was unlucky not to pick up more early wickets but Colchester weathered the storm and put up stought resistance. George went next cleaned bowled for 16 by Zaeem. Austin and DeSilva put on 25 in 12 overs as Park tightened up on their bowling and runs were hard to come by. DeSilva was finally brilliantly caught by Afrdi in the gully off Matt Sutton for 9. Ali Aslam was bought straight into the attack and with only his second had Kennedy well caught by Swainland behind the wicket for 0. Australian import Sam Maggs came to the crease and changed the complexion of the game with a fantastic innings of class and straight batting. Building fine a crucial partnership of 103 with Austin who was brilliantly run out finally by Afridi for a fine 60, but Maggs kept his compossure and went onto finish 80 not out no doubt with many more runs to coome this season. Parks slow bowlers performed well showing good control in now wet and blustery conditions. Ali Aslam finishing with 2-60 from 16 and Phil Goldstone and Andy Churchill bowling well at the death kept Colchester to 204-7 from there adjusted 57 overs.
Park with 48 overs to bat had an opening partnership of 40 with Luke Baker being bowled by Ben Stephens for 22, Russ Collard just about saw Ali Aslam depart without scoring in fading light as the rain closed in. With the umpires offering the light both sides tried to soldier on but the weather closed in and the match was abandoned as draw with Park picking up 7 points and Colchester 6. Colchester should be commended for the ground which looked and played superbly. Good to have a classy ground and wicket back in the premiership which will offer great games throughout the summer.
