UPMINSTER v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 17 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
On a hot summer’s day at Upminster Park, GPRCC won the toss and asked Upminster to bat first. From the very start, Upminster batted aggressively with W. Murphy and Bussey setting the pace early on. GPRCC however persevered and thanks to the determination of Winmill (3-72) who dismissed both W. Murphy (48) and Bussey (34) GPRCC briefly looked like they may be able to rein in the home side. All hopes were of restricting the free scoring Upminster were however dashed when Rob Tuffee came to the wicket. After being dropped without having scored a run Tuffee went on to score his maiden league century ending up unbeaten 116. Tuffee was provided with very little support from the rest of the Upminster line-up with the next five Upminster batsman all failing to make double figures with Toogood (3-65) proving effective during his second spell against the tail enders. At just under 250 for 9 it looked like GPRCC may have been able to restrict Upminster to chaseable target, however, an Upminster last wicket stand of 50 took the Upminster total to 300 and put the game well beyond the reach of the GPRCC. There were very few positives to take from the fielding performance of GPRCC with the number of catches dropped approaching double figures and extras (52) proving to be the second top scorer of the Upminster innings.
Having been set a large total, the GPRCC response got off to a shaky start with Kullar being trapped LBW early on in the innings. Toogood came to the wicket to help steady the ship but was frustrated by some tight bowling and fell just short of the 20 mark too the bowling of Ison. The fall of GPRCC second wicket bought Kliber to the crease to join Trayler, who had been batting steadily from the beginning of the innings. Soon after the Kliber came to the wicket Upminster decided to slow the pace of the bowling down in an attempt to ‘buy’ some wickets and force a result. However, the change in tactic from Upminster had far from the desired effect and all present were witness to a impressive display of batting by both Trayler (91) and Kliber (54) who quickly increased the tempo of the innings to bring GPRCC to within easy striking distance of the 200 runs required for the maximum batting points. Following the dismissals of Trayler (91) and Kliber (54), the pairing of Tarr and Lock brought the innings to a close passing the 200 run milestone with ease.
A more realistic declaration may have seen an exciting end to the game. As it was Upminster got 9 points and GP&R got 8 to stay one point ahead of their local rivals.
