SAFFRON WALDEN v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 10 Jun 2006 at 11.30am
Match was Drawn Drawn 6 points
Match report
Again a weakened Park side took to the field to take on Saffron Walden.
Park asked Saffron to bat first on a very good batting wicket and a lightning outfield. Park had a steady start with the ball, but after an hour Saffron got used to the pace and the runs started to flow. Berry removed Sparrow LBW for 25 but then overseas George played some fine strokes to up the tempo adding 95 with in form Tom Westly before George was dismissed by a fine stumping off Berry for 49 leaving Saffron on 137-2 from 31 overs. The heat started to pick up both in tempreature and the bat as Ecclestone and Westly moved on adding 131 in 20 overs with both players reaching fine centuries.Westly was deservedly snapped up by Filmalter well caught by Swainland for a superb 117. Parks bowlling was full of effort, the committment in the field was outstanding , never giving in to the heat nor the assualt with the bat. Saffron went on strolling past the 300, Ecclestone moving to another fine 100 and still the runs came as did the overs as the game was taken away from a depleted Park batting line up. Hyam finally removed Ecclestone for 107 and Saffrons innings was declared on 332-4 from a long 62 overs.
Park lost Hyam early for 12 and Hendriks was soon to follow for 0 both the bowling to Weekes. Mike Allen was caught off George for 6 at first slip and Parks challnge for a stiff target was all but over at 39-3 from 12 overs. Swainland and Kullar showed solid defiance before Kullar went for 18. Swainland and Davey then bought about some respectability. Swainland 64 was dismissed by Westly as he continued his fine game. He went on to claim another 3 wickets but Davey attacked with his first knock this season compiling a fine 81 and saving Park from defeat as he and Berry saw Park through the last over finishing on 206-9.
A very resolute all round effort seeing Park to a well fought draw given their injuries, whilst this should not be confused as an excuse but praise for the guys who steeped up their all round performances in games over the last fortnight.
