Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v SOUTH WOODFORD 5TH on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 92 runs
Match report
At last some sunny weather for the final league match played at the picturesque Great and Little Warley ground. Park won the toss and batted on a grassy, slow pitch that made timing difficult and lush outfield and faced some wayward opening bowling with a large number of wides. Indeed there were to be no less than 52 extras in the Park innings! Both Ian Greenwood and Sampath Gamvasam settled in well and the latter played some authorative shots to keep the scoreboard ticking early on including two 6s. The pair put on 112 for the first wicket before Ian departed mistiming a pull and being caught and Liam Neal followed two balls later nicking one that kept low. 58 were added for the 3rd wicket as Sampath continued to dominate, accumulating well, and when he left stumped for an excellent 91 (8 fours and 2 sixes) a clutch of wickets fell seeking a declaration which came at 205 for 8 leaving Park 50 overs to bowl back. For South Woodford the pick of the bowlers was the persevering Martin Woodhatch with his leg breaks who picked up 4 for 65 off 16 overs. Park's attack of Shaz Jabar and Andy Jenner gave nothing away (in contrast to their visitors) and with the pitch playing slower Jenner made the breakthrough getting some extra bounce for Graham Poultney to take the slip catch and Jabar got a second next over. South Woodford resisted stoutly but Jenner took third as James Perera made the catch in the covers and Ian Greenwood quickly added a fourth. Woodhatch and Rampersad counterattacked with the former playing some clean drives in 27 but he was undone by Greenwood through a good catch by Liam Neal and Greenwood and Jabar in tandem took it down to needing two wickets off 8 overs remaining. Gritty play by South's skipper Phil Hardie held things up and then Greenwood was struck in the face attempting a caught and bowled, holding up play for 10 minutes or so. However on resumption he bowled Hardie with a good one. 2 overs to go! The returning Andy Jenner induced Rampersad to chip to cover for Liam Neal to pouch his second catch and Park had won by 92 runs with 8 balls to spare. Jabar had figures of 19o 7m 24r 3w, Jenner 10.4o 4m 8r 3w, Greenwood 12o 3m 40r 4w. Another match played in good spirit by both teams, good weather, and some drinks in the bar to finish off the league season. Park finish 4th rueing four cancelled/abandoned weather affected matches but overall it has been a good summer of cricket for the 5th team and good opportunities for the younger players to develop their game and experience. Thanks to all who played this year and made it such an enjoyable season!
