Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 3rd X1 v KINGFISHER on Sun 03 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 125 runs
Match report
A young GPR team with nine colts, some making their senior debuts, put in a good performance against a strong Kingfisher side. Steve McCormack, captaining GPR for the first time, asked the opposition to bat - the only option as they only had 5 players at the start of the game! Louis Stuckey and Mark D'Cruz bowled well in their opening 6 over spells, Mark's inswing twice hitting the stumps to claim early wickets. As the rest of the Kingfisher side began arriving, their usual top order batsmen came to the wicket and began showing some aggressive shot-making and clean hitting to rapidly increase the run rate, Ali in particular being severe on any loose bowling. Sam Bragg and Peter Collier claimed a wicket each in the middle of the innings, helped by an excellent boundary catch by Matthew Peacock who, between his hands and a rather more delicate piece of his anatomy, managed to keep the ball off the ground. With the ball flying to all parts, Louis Stuckey came back to claim 2 wickets towards the end of the innings as Kingfisher finished on 322-6, Ali 153 not out, no doubt mindful that in last years fixture they scored 290 and lost! Despite the large score, the young Park team can take heart from the great commitment and character they showed in the field right to the end of the alloted 40 overs.
Attempting to chase such a score was never really a realistic option, it was more important Park's young batsmen used the opportunity to bat properly and gain experience. The early wickets of Locke and Peacock brought the not so young Churchill to the wicket, who hit a quick 74, while at the other end Peter Thain scored 10 and Luke Caruana played well for 18. Sam Bragg, following his 48 the previous day, scored his maiden half-century, including seven consecutive 4s, finishing with an excellent 66 not out, supported by Peter Collier, 9 not out. GPR finished on 197-5, well short of their target but with much to take from the game. Thanks to Danny Feasey, Luke Caruana and Matthew Peacock for coming into the side late on Sunday morning.
