Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 3rd X1 v RAINHAM on Sun 29 May 2005 at 2pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won lost by 9 wickets
Match report
This was the first 3rd XI match of the season, and there was a bizarre record achieved in the game. With the selected wicketkeeper dropping out before the game, and no replacement keeper available, Park were to be indebted to Roger Boothby volunteering to fill the gap, but he could do little to stem the flow of extras in the Rainham innings as much of the bowling was erratic in line and length, producing 64 extras in all with 44 wides and 18 byes! A total of 64 extras is a record of some sort, surely?! And put alongside the 27 extras from the Rainham side for the Park innings, a total of 91 extras in the match is unlikely to be matched again in the club's history (well at least that is what all the players said after the game and over a drink, but who knows.........).
That said, the Park players batted well for their 195 total with good contributions coming from Peter Thain, showing patience in his innings of 49 and unluckily just missing his half-century; Steve McCormack, with one massive six in his 35; an enjoyable debut innings in the thirds from junior colt Adam McKie; and a quick fire 22 not out from Adam Locke. This was all undone when Adam was unable to find any rhythm in his bowling, and once the batsmen (Dave Adkins 72 not out, Mike Callaghan 42) got going the runs just kept flowing despite the best endeavours of the other bowlers. Full credit to Rainham, and also credit to Adam for coming back well at the death and claiming the one wicket to fall in a 9 wicket defeat.
