SOUTH WOODFORD v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at 1.30om
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
South Woodford won the toss and decided to bat on a slow pitch at their home ground. A catch went down in the second over and in the course of the innings two other chances were also grassed so that the bowlers' efforts were not reflected in their figures. That said, the four bowlers all maintained a reasonable discipline and made life difficult for the batsmen, and at times the primary scoring shots were edges through the point and slip areas. Steady batting progress was made but never at a real lick. The bad balls tended to go to the boundary, especially to the 35 yard boundary on one side, and Rizwal in particular was taking a fancy to this area when he played one arial shot too many and was caught by Greg C hurchill off the bowling of Rob Mayne for a well hit 41. Thereafter, the combination of the seam of Louis Stuckey (a very good second spell), and Nick Ford (some excellent late swing) and the slows of Durvinder Bhogal (very steady with length and line) ensured that the final total was below par for the conditions.
Tom Kershaw was out quickly in reply, but with Greg Churchill returning from injury after a month off and playing a well paced and stylish innings, and Chris Goldsmith surviving an early chance to play well on both sides of the wicket, the bowling was not given the chance to dominate. Chris was out for an excellent 48 after adding 133 for the 2nd wicket with Greg, and Rob Mayne increased the tempo in a quick fire stand of 25 before Danny Cox (28 not out) joined the chairman in an unbroken stand of 61 to seal a very good win with four overs to spare. Greg finished on a magnificent 116 not out (and a tested hamstring that had withstood the test!).
The win continued the 4thXIs promising start to the season and kept them in the top 3. Next week it is old rivals Hutton at the Polo Field.
