WANSTEAD v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 23 Jul 2005 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 3 Wickets
Match report
Having won the toss GPR elected to bat but on a slow, dry wicket giving some indifferent early bounce, lost Jason Toogood for a duck. Bal Kullar followed, mistiming a drive to mid-on but Greg Churchill and James Patient managed to put a partnership together before Wanstead brought on two spinners who, getting some turn from the wicket, made run scoring difficult for Park's batsmen. After JP was adjudged caught behind, Matt Tarr batted confidently, playing several well timed drives. Greg was stumped for a 46 as Park looked to increase the run rate and after Matt was caught, Park's hope of reaching 200 or even 175 looked out of reach. Three more quick wickets before the 150 was up brought Ed Gavigan to the wicket and his cameo innings of 19 meant just 4 were needed off the 52nd over for 6 batting points. Unfortunately Ed was stumped and after a scampered single off the next ball, Craig Bray, having batted sensibly for 22, was last out with Park on 172, probably thirty short of a competitive target.
Park's bowlers gave the side some early hope as Ryan Sammons and Barry Olivier bowled with some pace and aggression to take three early wickets. Wanstead's batsmen then recovered and had 100 on the board before Park could get the fourth wicket. With the weather looking like closing in, the batting side tried to accelerate the scoring but when the rain came it was decided to play on, making conditions difficult for the bowlers. As Wanstead looked to finish the game quickly, Jason bowled well in the conditions, taking two wickets with Barry also claiming one more. However, it was not quite enough as the target was reached seven wickets down with time to spare.
