ILFORD v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Despite a promising start to this match, GP&R were ultimately heavily defeated at Valentines Park. With several players unavailable, GP&R went into the match with only three regular bowlers, one of those, 15 year old Ed Gavigan, playing only his second 2nd XI game. Having been asked to bowl first, Park's young opening attack of Jason Toogood and Ed Gavigan bowled superbly to take 4 early wickets with less than 40 on the board. With the bowling directive limiting their opening spell to 11 overs between them, Park's lack of depth and a fightback by Ilford's middle order saw the game get away from GP&R. Ilford batted positively, running well and punishing Park's frequent loose deliveries. Andy D'Cruz, supporting the main bowlers and bowling for only the second time in the league this year, bowled with good control and committment in a 17 over spell, a few loose deliveries being punished to a short leg-side boundary. On a very hot afternoon, Park's fielding was not at its best and Ilford's batsmen piled on the runs, declaring after 51 overs.
However, with a decent wicket and very fast outfield, it was possible for GP&R to put together a large score themselves. Balvinder and Jason got off to a good start but Bal was adjudged caught to one he felt he had hit into the ground. With Ilford's change bowlers brought on, their off-spinner highlighted what Park had been missing as he got plenty of turn from the wearing wicket. Park's chase fell apart as a succession of wickets fell to leave them 6 wickets down with less than 100 on the board. James Patient and Andy D'Cruz then batted watchfully and sensibly to put together an important partnership that was seeing out time while gaining a couple of batting points. Then, with just 5 overs remaining came the turning point as both James and Andy were given out caught behind and LBW respectively to the disappointment of the Park team. With one of Ilford's bowlers suffering a no-ball problem, he was adjudged to have bowled a legal delivery to dismiss Ed Gavigan then bowled a no-ball on the last delivery of his over, only to take the final wicket with the extra ball. All in all, a disappointing end to a below par performance from GP&R.
