Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v LOUGHTON 4TH on Sat 05 Sep 2009 at 1pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 7 wickets

Match report The equation before this match started was that Loughton 4th were 2 points ahead of Park, who were 1 point ahead of West Essex 4th, and one of these three teams would be promoted along with division champions Wanstead 5th. The news was that West Essex had gained 20 points because their opponents Fives & Heronians could not raise a side, so Park had to bat first and win if they were to be promoted, and Loughton had to win to go up. Park duly batted first on a fast outfield and flat and very good pitch at the Royal Liberty, one with some pace and bounce, something that has been very lacking all season! The openers were kept in check by the Loughton attack as 35 came for the first wicket off 14 overs but the score advanced to 82 for 2 off 23 overs and from this point Arasu Balasobramaniam, who had been in good form from the start, and Nelson Lopes took the attack to the bowlers adding 60 in quick time before Arasu was out for a well played 64 (9 fours). Rajesh Kanojia accelerated the innings from the off and he hit a ferocious 52 (9 fours, 1 six) in no time and Nelson played some magnificent drives and pulls in a superb display as he reached his maiden century for the club, none of the bowlers exercising much control. As soon as he reached his century the declaration was made early, giving Park a minimum of 56 overs to bowl back and try and force a win. Some loose early bowling was punished by the Loughton openers, but the introduction of Ian Greenwood's off spin brought a quick breakthrough and Andy Jenner claimed a second wicket courtesy of a great catch at deep mid off by Nelson Lopes who had run from mid on! Greenwood claimed a third wicket and at 100 for 3 the game was wide open. However, catches win matches, and Park proceeded to drop two absolute sitters at mid on and slip to reprieve the 4th wicket pair, and the young opener Adam Redpath played surperbly well to take advantage of the let off accompanied by Michael Bridges in a massive and increasingly dominating stand . They treated all the bowling on its merits but took full toll of poor deliveries as they racked up the runs and Park shelled a further five chances. In the end they had 12 overs to spare as the winning runs were scored with Redpath on 116 and Bridges on 103, the younsters taking full credit for some great batting to see their side to promotion.
Park's 5ths can look back with great satisfaction on their season even if at the death they could not force a win in unusual circumstances. The team of veterans and young players gelled well and fully justified 4th place in the division. Thanks to everyone for playing their part and here's looking forward to next season's league programme.
