Match report This local Derby was played on what can only be described as a beach at the Metropolitan Police ground at Chigwell, and the loose surface and erratic and entirely unpredictable bounce had a strong bearing all through the match. Park won the toss and decided to bat against ten man Hornchurch, but struggled against some effective Hornchurch bowling especially from veteran Frank Grann. After 16 overs the score had inched to 31 for 3, all three wickets going down to catches as the batsmen mistimed awkward deliveries. Nelson Lopes stabilised things with a well made 31 firstly with Rajesh Kanojia, who hit a brisk 20, and then Anil Patel 21 to take the score to a more respectable 96 for 5 as veteran Doug Shewring bowled a good spell in the middle of the innings. The other bowlers could not maintain their line however and acceleration came from Danny Long, who punished some short bowling for a season's best 35, and finally from an unbroken 8th wicket stand by Andy Jenner 15 not out and Gurjit Jutla 25 not out as Park reached 202 for 7 in the 51st over and declared. Grann finished with 3 for 42 off 15 overs and Shewring 3 for 30 off eight overs, with six of the seven wickets to fall going down to catches.
The Hornchurch reply never got going as Park's learned from the first innings and pitched the ball up to keep the batsmen playing. The ball was in the air a lot as the batsmen struggled with an ever more erratic pitch. Rajesh Kanojia struck in the second over, Gurjit Jutla in the fifth and thereafter it was a question of how long the batsmen could resist. Lol Mason jnr tried some big shots but eventually holed out for 18 and the fielding supported the bowlers with some well judged catches, Gurjit taking a caught and bowled and two others, Ammar Zahid and Danny Long chipping in and Andy Jenner a tumbling caught and bowled. Kanojia and Andy Jenner wrapped up the innings between them with 20 overs to spare for a comprenhensive win wih Rajesh fully deserving figures of 13 overs 4 maidens 4 for 26, supported by Jenner with 3 for 12 off 6 overs, Jutla 1 for 12 off five overs and Patel 1 for 3 off 3 overs. In the circumstances this was a good all round team effort on a very difficult playing surface. Next week the fianl outing of the league season is against division high flyers Loughton 4th.
