Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Brentwood on Sat 22 May 2004 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Stand in skipper John Windebank won the toss and decided to take the field with a very much experimental side. Tom Kershaw (16) and Mark D'cruz (14) opened the bowling and despite some good bowling from Mark in particular Brentwood got off to quite a good start. First change was debutant and local postmaster Anil Patel who bowled with great accuracy and some guile to the extent that skipper John kept him own to bowl 16 consecutive overs. Anil made the first inroads in the Brentwood side by getting opener Wicks caught by a fine diving errofrt by Mark D'cruz. Normally a wicket keeper Jack Kliber was brought into the attact and bowled with some panache and got some great movement off the seam and well deserved his wicket. Jorden Tolan who arrived late and hadn't played a game in 3 years bowled his firs over like he hsadn't bowled for 3 years and it was quite uncanny how ell he recovered from the over "from hell" to bowl with some pace and hostility to rip out the Brentwood middle order with 5-72.
Parks reply chaseing 232 started well with old timer Ron Montgomery putting on 63 for the first wicket with young Matt Tarr. Ron's dismissal brought "Monty jnr" to the crease who batted well and looked untroubled before playing all round one to be dismissed for 20. Tom Kershaw and Matt tarr then really moved up a gear and put Park in a position to win the game but when Matt got out for a fine 65 and Tom fell just short of a deserved 50 Park lost a bit of a momentum. Anil Patel and Jorden Tolan batted well but were clearly struggling due to their time away from the game. In the end Park Settled for a draw in what was really a fine match. Specail mention to Anil Patel playing his first game for a few years contributed well bowling 16 consecutive overs and contrbuting 21 with the bat AND taking a fine slipp catch. FOOTNOTE: it was great to see the youngsters not just making uo the numbers but also contributing to what would have been a fine win
