Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Fives & Heronians on Sat 03 Jul 2004 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Events dictated six changes from last week's successfull team and very young team (relatively speaking!), took the field. We lost the toss yet again and were put into bat, losing Burchy bowled fourth ball. This brought together Andy D'Cruz and Danny Cox, the latter picking up a bat for the first time since last August. Fives bowled their overs quickly but the two batsmen picked up the singles and played very sensibly to build a strong foundation for the innings, eventually putting on 130 for the second wicket when Andy was out for a very well made 71. Danny perished for a great 67 and the young middle order of Jack Kliber and Tom Kershaw, with some lusty blows from Jon Roberts at the death, helped Pockets to push the total on to an excellent 233 at 4.05pm. The Fives openers were no mugs and Ian Rotsey in particular punished anything short or over pitched with a fine display. The benefit of having an experienced attack is that it allows us to keep in the match and despite an opening stand of 98 both Wanger and Jungle plugged away. Jungle snapped up both openers in short succession and the introduction of Cobblers produced his best spell of the season with three wickets against the middle order as we whittled away and increased the pressure. With nine overs left we still needed five wickets but we got this down to the chance of nearly four overs at the last pair, who held out despite some edging and playing and missing. Jungle finished a marathon spell of 24 overs with 5 for 64, Cobblers returned 3 for 39 and wanger deserved better than his solitary wicket. Mention must be made of good work behind the sticks from Jack , and all the young players who fielded well and kept concentration in a session of 57 overs! 12 points keeps us well up with the leaders Wanstead and Brentwood (we play both in the next two weeks) as we enter the second half of the season.
