Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 16's v Saffron Walden on Sun 25 Jul 2004 at 2pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 66 Runs
Match report
Saffron won the Toss and put Park in on a slow wicket. Park lost skipper Craig Bray straight away and Andy D'cruz and Matt Tarr patiently rebuilt the innings against a tidy Saffron attack that gave very little way. Matt was out to a tremendous catch from a fielder running in from the deep square leg boundary. Jason Toogood batted with the class he has been showing most of the season before being bowled for 29. Andy D'cruz was eventually out for a patient 58. Jack Kliber then played a beautiful innings of 41 which was ful of powerful wristy shots. An unfortunate mix up led to Jack being run out for 41. Tom Kershaw played some lovely shots to make up for the run-out and it was Toms effort coupled with some powerful hitting by Ryan Sammons(1 massive six) that ensure Park posted a respectable total of 228-7.
Saffron reply got off to a good start scoring at roundabout the asking rate. The Saffron opener Price looked a very good player and as long as he remained in it looked good for Saffron. Jason Toogood made the first breakthrough getting the Saffron opener to sky one up which Andy D'cruz claimed. The Saffron number 3 also looked good but fell to a sharpe catch by Craig Bray off the bowling of Peter Collier. Peter's bowling has been one of the great successes of the year and he deservedly finished as the leading wicket taker(11) and he didn'.t really start bowling until well into the campaign. The star bowler of the day however was Danny Coombe who came into the attack with Saffron still in the game and bowled 5 overs for just 11 runs and two wickets including Saffrons skipper and top batsman Price. Well done Danny .
So results conspired against us and we have finished in 3rd out of ten. With 6 wins aout of 9 including 4 wins on the trot to finish. The turning point of the season was undoubtedly the game at Harlow. With a weakend side we fought when so many things were against us to lose by just 5 runs. You boys deserved better than that. Special thanks to Bob Coombe for caring so much and trying so hard. It is a big loss to the club that he feels he can no longer continue to look afetr the U16s. Overall boys be proud you tried you hardest and were just 5 runs short of qualifying
