Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 3rd X1 v Wanstead on Sun 08 Sep 2002 at 1pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 1 run

Match report GPR batted first and got off to a steady start with young opener Andy D'cruz helping the experienced Bob Coombe add 34 for the first wicket. Bob Coombe batted quite beautifully for 41 before he suffered the same fate as his openeing partner, that is bowled by Wanstead's young fast bowler Mervyn Westfield. Veterans Dave Osbourne and Ron Montgomery both got good starts and looked comfortable before Osbourne was run-out and Montomery succumbed to the slightly built Wanstead spinner Steve Ramdial. Jason Toogood showed some good form before also being bowled by young Steven. Veteran Andy Jenner then guided the tail from a perlious 103-4 to 161-8 off the 40 overs helped in part by some lusty shots and edges from D'cruz and Cobill.
K. Munner bowled well for Wanstead with 7-2-9-2 at the death but the pick of their bowlers was Mervyn Westfield picking up 3 for 26 off 6 overs.

In reply Wanstead started well with Gunalan Snr and T. Sikander taking 30 runs off the first 7 overs. Pressure was then applied by the Gidea Park veterans, left arm spinner Dave Cobill and medium pacer Andy Jenner bowling the next 12 overs for just 18 runs, and during this spell quick thinking by both bowlers produced two wickets via run-outs as Wanstead tried to break the stranglehold. The combination of their 16 overs for just 41 runs was to prove vital, although neither bowler took a wicket. Dave Osbourne's off spin kept up the good work, keeping up the pressure from one end , and he took three good wickets as the batsmen chased the game. Young seamers Ryan Sammons and Jason Toogood returned at the death to bowl tight overs when it mattered most and with 12 needed by Wanstead off the last over GPR kept therir nerve were able to win by just 1 run.

Special mention should be made of Wanstead's young batsman T. Sikander, and in particluar Mervyn Westfied, who played with great technique and concentration and just failed to take their side home.

The first ever Jeff Rodrigues Trophy was played in an excellent spirit with an exciting finish and was a credit to cricket and a fitting tribute to the man who inspired this competition. The trophy was presented to the GPR captain Ron Montomery by Jeff's sisters and a very sociable evening ensued.
