Ardleigh Green Pres. Day v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday A on Sun 24 Aug 2008 at 1.00PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won by 2 runs

Match report I shall start with a huge thank you to our hosts AGCC for the invitation to take part not only in their presidents day but to have the game in respect of John Whittikind who passed away earlier this year, a friend and keen cricketer in his day to both clubs, AGCC supplied a superb days entertainment and fare, both food and alcoholic. Being your reporters first such event I was truly impressed and grateful to be involved and we know John would have approved of the game played in such fine spirit.
But i shall now turn my thoughts and musings to the game. A late running under 11's fixture, a kit in the wrong clubhouse and missing bar stool base ensured that GPR were asked to bat first and it was Matt "can i buy a run? " Tarr and Matthew Sutton who opened the innings. Matt Tarr soon gloved one to the keeper and James "Young Jungle" Evans joined Matt Sutton at the crease.
It is at this point I need to introduce you to a new verb.... to clunge. To clunge (verb) is the act of knocking the cover off the ball being caught by the slips or keeper (again) and stoically standing your ground awaiting the fickle finger of fate from the umpire. Matt Sutton clunged himself shortly after and Tommy "Guns" Montgomery wandered out to the crease and wandered back without scoring. Dave "Buckets" Pasola then joined the tall person, scored 13 and walked back leaving the tall person to be joined by the shortest member of the team Sam "Talent" Hewitt.
Sam's latest exploits in adult cricket were truly stunning, but they come further down the page your reading. Sam impressed with the bat assisting James to his fifty before he fell for 70+. Sam departed and Ron "Monty Panesar" Montgomery blitzed a stunning 49 of 19 balls with James "Bar Monkey" Patients and Russ "Bar Hamster" Collard ensured GPR passed 200 in there forty overs.
Lunch, half a bottle of fine red wine and a special prawn curry and I for one was looking forward to a Sunday afternoon nap. Then someone suggests we field. AGCC required 203 from there 40 overs. Matt "I'll try bowling instead" Tarr bowled some superb deliveries and was unlucky not to get the opener caught pulling just over "Buckets" Pasola's head. Matt Sutton ran up the hill, only "Bar Hamster" Collard replaced Matt Sutton's flare from the attack, not before he had one green batsmen out leg before.
Matt Tarr then removed another caught behind by "Bar Monkey" Patients. Sam then caught another off the bowling of Tarr to leave AGCC in some trouble 3- 30. Sam's day then took off, given the ball by the "Hamster," Sam produced bowling of quality line and length. He quickly took his first wicket caught by Pasola and followed this by his second also caught by Pasola. Sam's enthusiasm for cricket is inspiring and clear for all present to see.
AGCC started to compile runs with accomplished batsmen picking up singles at will and the occasional boundary on the way. Ably assisted by Ron "Monty I didn't see it" Montgomery's spillage of the simplest catch. Unwittingly Ron had managed to set up a thrilling climax. Park's bowlers toiled away, Mike Tarr had a wicket caught by Collard before the dangerous Sam was reintroduced. He quickly got his third the dangerous (Roy Smith) caught by Pasola at Long on. And then his forth LBW and his fifth well caught by Bar monkey to complete and quite stunning performance from someone only 12 years old.
191 - 9. Still the batsman reprieved by "Monty" Montgomery was at the crease and Park looked to finish the game in the next over as asked by the umpire. Tom Montgomery bowled two full tosses which were dispatched for 4 and 6 leaving leaving AGCC needing 2 to win, attempting a sweep the Green batsmen moved his foot past the line and "Bar Monkey" Patients removed the bails to ensure Park a victory by one run. Young Sam received the match ball for his five wickets, 20 quid from AGCC and praise from everyone watching. Whether Park can field the young now professional Hewitt,in games to come will need investigating!!
The bar after was lively and it was good to see everyone enjoying themselves in what was a special occasion.
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful day, our hosts laying on complete hospitality and it was great to see that cricket and the memory of John stood so proud .
