EPPING v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 23 Aug 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Park bounced back form last week's defeat to record a comprehensive 8 wicket win over Epping 3rds at the picturesque Coopersale ground. Both sides had enforced changes because of the holiday weekend. Winning the toss (at last!) Park elected to field on a small ground and with a well used pitch that proved to have the consistency of plasticine. It was dreadfully slow and the bounce was inconsistent and mainly very low, but this acted to the advantage of the batsmen rather than the bowlers because of the lack of pace, and provided they watched the ball. The opening attack of Adam McKie and Andy Jenner kept things tight but with the turgid pitch there was not much happening as openers Sanderson and P Offord made slow progress, hitting the occasional short ball for boundaries when they had the chance but little else. The introduction of young leg spinner Chris McKie brought a breakthrough as Offord went on the attack but was bowled for 29 with the score on 82 and 20 runs later Sanderson was well held by Simon Trowse off Dave Cobill for 58 containing 10 fours, and this proved a turning point. Spinners McKie, Cobill and Dave Osborne bowled good lines and to their field, the fielding was good, catches were held, and gradually the pressure got to the batsmen as one by one they succumbed, including one to a great piece of fielding by Dave Pasola which produced a run out. The score subsided from 136 for 3 off 36 overs to 170 all out, with Dave Osborne taking 4 for 17 off 7 overs, Dave Cobill 3 for 37 off 11 overs, Chris Mckie 1 for 42 off 7 overs, and Adam Mckie in another good display of seam bowling 1 for 21 off 12 overs.
Park openers Craig Bray and Ashu Dahbi made a positive start against inconsistent bowling and ran well, taking advantage of anything loose, and 50 was up in 10 overs. The score advanced rapidly from this point and the stand was worth 120 in 19 overs when the 3rd change bowler Fleming (who went on to bowl very well)produced a snorter out of no-where to have Craig Bray caught behind for an excellent 59 (7 fours). Ashu followed stumped for 69 (9 fours and 1 six) with the score on 148 but Simon Trowse and Adam mcKie ensured a comfortable win with 13 overs to spare. There was an unfortunate injury to an Epping fielder during the innings when he tripped chasing the ball and dislocated his collar bone, and we wish him a speedy recovery. In the spirit of the game a substitute fielder was provided. Overall this was a good team performance in which everyone played their part.
This win pushes Park up from 6th to 4th in a very tight and close division under runaway leaders Chelmsford. Next week we are away to Old Parkonians 3rds.
