SOUTHEND ON SEA v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 19 Jul 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
Park lost the toss for the eigth time in nine outings and were invited to bat first by Southend 3rds. The Victory Sports ground pitch gave immediate problems to the batsmen when in the first two overs the ball either kept low or bounced unduly when pitched shorter. It continued to perform poorly for over two hours and the overall impact was to undermine the Park batting effort. Ashu Dahbi and Baljit Jutla did well to take the score to 34 for the first wicket against some good seam bowling from Kearney and Gilroy, before Ashu got one that crept under his bat. Ammar Zahid was yorked by a good one and Ahmed Butt succumbed first ball to leave the innings in disarray at 36 for 3 and worse followed when Baljit chipped one to mid on. Adam McKie settled in and played some pleasing strokes down the ground but he was undone by a lifter that followed him and he gloved to the 'keeper, and Dave Pasola edged to the 'keeper to leave the score 73 for 6 after 24 overs. Gilroy was the bowler causing the damage and he ended a spell of 15 overs with excellent figures of 5 for 41. However, the change bowling was played well by Graham Redwood and Harvir Jutla who added 27 quickly, with Harvir in particular demonstrating some strong driving with 4 fours and 2 sixes, but Graham perished caught on the boundary and no-one else stayed long. Harvir was finally out caught for a pugnacious 45 and the innings finished on 127 after 40 overs, probably 30 too few especially as the pitch had quietened down somewhat. Young off spinner Stannard took 4 for 36 after intially going for 26 off four overs.
The new ball proved very effective for Park's opening seamers 15 year old Jakk Carver and 16 year old Adam McKie. Jakk showed good control and swing as he took three wickets, two bowled and one pouched at slip, and Southend were 28 for 3, but at this point Jakk had to finish his initial 5 over spell. Number four Shepherd decided to hit out to add a quick 28. However, Ahmed Butt began a very steady spell and he had Shepherd out bowled - 62 for 4 and game on. The 5th wicket pair of Ross and Collins decided to play carefully and watchfully, though, as they had plenty of time in which to bat, but were tested in Ahmed's spell of 7 overs 5 maidens 1 for 15, excellent figures. The score inched forward and 47 were added in 22 overs before skipper Dave Cobill had Ross caught for 17. Unfortuntely the break came too late and Collins went on to finish 30 not out and win the match after the home side had completed 42 overs. Extras totalled 31 including 5 penalty runs when the ball hit the helmet behind the 'keeper, and 9 no balls and 5 wides, and at the end of the day this was a significant contribution on a day when the pitch condition dictated the course of the match. The bowlers all tried hard and none could be faulted for effort, with the spells by Jakk Carver with an excellent return of 8 overs 1 maiden 3 for 22, and Ahmed Butt the pick.
The defeat pushed the side a couple of places down the rankings but next week we are at home to Old Southendians and with plenty to play for in a tight division below run away leaders Chelmsford.
