OLD SOUTHENDIANS v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 10 May 2008 at 1PM
Match was Drawn

Match report Park entered their first league match at a higher level in the 3rd XI league division 3 without 6 of the players who successfully gained promotion in 2007, and this showed in what was a pretty boring draw. The ground conditions at Shoebury Park were a very slow, turgid pitch which got slower as the game wore on and a rough outfield. Old Southendian won the toss and batted and soon lost a wicket in the 3rd over to the excellent Kier Smith who swung the ball and kept a good length all game. Batting was slow reflecting the pitch quality and after 21 overs the second wicket fell with the total only 52. By this time Park had missed three catches, letting themselves down from the high standards that they had set last season, and their poor fielding was to cost them dear as Nick Linfield compiled a patient 70 to establish the foundations of a score. Some lusty blows by Dennis (24), aided by more missed chances, helped the acceleration but a shoddy spell of five overs saw the score race from 64 for 2 to 113 for 2 and this was to prove the difference at the end of the afternoon. The returning Smith coupled with the spin of Zadwala made sure it was hard work for the batsmen but 50 from number 5 Austin (with the ball going to diffeent parts of the ground from different parts of the bat, interspersed with the odd authentic shot!) ensured that the Old Boys were in sight of maximum batting points which they duly attained in the 52nd over. Kier Smith strove hard for well deserved figures of 23 overs 2 maidens 5 wickets 82 runs, and Abdul Zadwala gave a promising display with 18 overs 4 maidens 3 wickets 57 runs.
With an under strength batting line up there was a bit for Park to do but they opened brightly with Jerry Trayler cracking three boundaries before being brilliantly caught and bowled by Jackson for 16. A lesson for the Park fielders! Thereafter it was dreadfully slow going with no pace on the ball or in the pitch and many deliveries drifting harmlessly down the leg side, Sanders having an opeing spell of 16 overs 8 maidens 3 wickets for 16 runs! At 84 for 5 when Jas Chaggar was out for a patient 25 it looked as though Park might not get a batting bonus point, but Harvir Jutla played the best innings of the afternoon for Park, ending 38 not out with 5 boundaries, and was well supported by Dave Skinner in adding 49 before Lee Carter came in to hit three boundaries and secure a second batting pointa at the end. The Old Boys bowled 53 overs, quite a remarkable rate of overs, but the pitch was the winner as it gave no help to either batsman or bowler with its lack of pace and bounce, so that the draw was in the end a predictable result.
The Park players can reflect on ring rustiness but also the need to establish the bowling and fielding virtues that served them so well in 2007. but there is a long way to go yet and plenty of time to get fully on track. Next week it is Southend on Sea 3rds at Gallows Corner.
