BENFLEET v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 2nd X1 on Sun 17 May 2015 at 14:00
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won Gidea Park and Romford Cricket Club
Match report
Headline: PARK PROVIDE FRANTIC FINALE
Going into this game in which this is park's first season in the Essex Sunday league in recent times, the Rogers Reign was looking to keep its unbeaten status, that being after the first game was an abandonment!! Being one of the most stress free weeks in organising a sunday team, the 11 men selected provided great balance and plenty of options which meant at the toss bat or bowl was a tough decision. Heads was the call, heads was what landed, so park elected to bowl and backed themselves to chase.
Magnet and Charlie Gordon set the tone for what was going to be a good, accurate day with the ball. Magnet bowled his allocation first up, 1 wicket for just 18 runs instantly put the pressure on the opposition to start picking up their run rate. Young Haddon didn't allow that and although he didn't pick up a wicket, must of beat the edge more times than the amount his bat cost! With one of the openers hanging around and the no.4 starting to counter attack, there was something in the air, the cricketing gods whispering in the ear of rogers telling him to throw the ball to Alan... otherwise known as crofty, which turned the game. Picking up 4 wickets, crofty launching his grenades and with his spin twin Joe Gordon (2 wickets) at the other end turning it the other way they gave the batsmen too much to contemplate. All that was left was for Harry Thompson to come on at the death and bowl not a single wide... you could tell this was a special day. He bowled exactly the lines and with the pace we wanted and gave benfleet no let up whilst Charlie Gordon wrapped it up with 3 wickets at the other end on queue, just as the 4:30pm cut off point loomed! Benfleet achieving 162 all out.
On the back of a superb spread, special mention to the chicken burgers! Tarr and Bray opened up being 2 of the elders, rising to the responsibility as was required. Tarr Tantalisingly pierced it seemed at one point like every delivery through the field for a boundary and was at 50 before some had even put down their final cheese and pickle sandwich! Bray saw off the new ball well, and after he fell, Donnelly and Alan... otherwise known as Crofty, quickly followed; maybe not having enough time to digest those chicken burgers... again, Fantastic. Rogers came to the crease and knocked 37, and poultney added a useful 16, whilst evidently feeling the effects of an all dayer the day before! Callum went and then the skip chipped on straight back at the bowler with 20 to get. With 4 wickets remaining you would THINK this would be easy, however Thompson came and went, probably dizzy at the fact he was at 7, haddon followed - then proceeded to tell the 5 man crowd of the Benfleet Barmy army the cost of his bat again.... bad decision, and then Joe Gordon showed, he's a bowler! it fell to charlie Gordon and Magnet to see us over the line with 16 needed, and when Charlie walked out with a mongoose, the heart was in the mouth every delivery! They slowly went about the job and got us to a draw! Charlie had one run the get, and in true park fashion still nearly gave a chance to throw it away driving one straight to mid off, however the mongoose power showed its worth as it pierced through the young lads hands and a scampered single secured a winning start to the campaign!
M.o.M - tough on Tarr with a 63 to miss out, but i'm sure the VC won't mind me giving it to Alan... otherwise known as crofty on this occasion with a spell of bowling that probable swung the game early in our favour.
Want to give special mention also to both Gordons, who seem to be in this early start to the season very valuable additions to the club and may the performances continue!
Great team performance and onto the next one!
