Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v HORNCHURCH on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1PM
Match was Drawn
Match report
After week of rain it was good to get out on the field, and we found a bright day and a pitch which was slow but true, a good surface for batsmen and one on which the bowlers would have to work hard. And so it proved. Hornchurch won the toss and asked Park to take first innings. Adam Mckie was out in the first over and after Jas Chaggar and Brijesh Patel had carefully taken the score to 38 against some accurate bowling by the Hornchurch seamers, the former was also out bowled. Amar Zahid joined Brijesh and together they steadily built the innings, adding 54 in reasonable time, the home team being aided by a rash of wides and byes from the visitors attack. By the end of the innings, in fact 60 extras had been recorded, including 24 wides and 21 byes! (for the record, in the Hornchurch tinnings there were 19 wides and 10 leg byes!) Zahid was out just as he was opening out, and Anil Patel was soon bolwed off his pads, the score sinking to 120 for 4. However, Graham Redwood's first knock of the season was just right, and he and Brijesh added 113 at a good rate and the innings prospered against a flagging attack. Brijesh played a series of good looking drives, pulls and cuts to go past 50 and then a debut 100 for the club finishing with 16 fours and one six in 108 not out, and Redwood made a well judged 35 not out. The over rate was a little tardy given the extras and Park declared after three hours batting and 50 overs. For the visitors Mike Rowe had a marathon 17 overs and with more luck would have had better figures, and colt Ronny Saunders impressed with his medium fast seamers.
with the pitch probably now at its best for batting the Hornchurch reply had to face accurate bowling and both Amar Zahid and Harvir Jutla complied, testing the batsmen and beating the bat regularly. Openers Persaud and Spray seemed to have weathered the storm when the latter was bowled by the perservering Zahid, and with the introduction of the spinners Dave Cobill and Anil Patel wickets fell at regular intervals, the batsmen all seeming to get in and then getting out. Persuad played well for his 51 before being one of cobill's four victims and with the score 148 for 6 and 12 overs remaining Jeremy West hit out and was well supported by young Stuart Edwards who hit 41, the pair adding 43. During this phase the Park fielding let the bowlers down as three catches were grassed and it was this that probably prevented a Park victory. The returning Zahid bowled Edwards but Hornchurch to their credit kept going for bonus points thereby giving Park a chance of picking up the final three wickets. Only one materialised and West was left 35 not out and the match finished a well played draw, Cobill finishing with 4 for 52 from 14 overs, Anil Patel 2 for 54 and Zahid 2 for 45. The game was conducted in an excellent spirit between the two teams and was a good advert for 4th XI cricket.
