Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hornchurch on Sat 27 Apr 2002 at 2pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 51 runs
Match report
Our lads "Buried" Hornchurch in emphatic style in this 1st Round League Cup encounter in defence of their title. Hornchurch fielded their overseas signing New Zealand Test opening bowler Chris Drum as well as a number of players that have recently left us including Simon Jones.Drum bowled well with no wickets on a flat Gallows surface. After Scott Davis was dismissed early by Sainsy Russ and Winnie batted well with Winnie going on to what should have been a superb century. Unfortunately he was given out in controversial circumstances on 96. He smashed one to the deep mid wicket boundary where of all people Jonesy was fielding. He managed to parry the ball with his feet over the line. He was unaware of this dispite the chorus of cat calls from the pavilion. Winnie was run out taking the second run and the umpires had no choice but to uphold the decision. 187 was always going to be a challenging total and after a good opening stand our bowlers gradually turned the screw and the pressure became too great for the Division 2 side. Winnie was the pick of the bowlers in a brilliant all round performance. Barry Hyam was outstanding behind the stumps and this team performance where the fielding backed up our bowlers superbly bodes very well for the coming season
