Finchley v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 2nd X1 on Sun 27 Apr 2003 at 2pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets
Match report
A young GPR side (Win D'cruz & Les Hall excepted!!) did well against a strong Finchley 2nd X1 but were just overpowered in the end. GPR batted first and Chris Collier and Chris Swainland batted aggressively to put on 63 for the first wicket. Chris Collier was unlucky to get out playing on with the ball just trickling onto the stumps when he looked set for a big score. Chris Swainland hit a couple of nice sixes before he was out. The middle order struggled somewhat before some lusty blows from Phil Goldstone and Kier Smith got things moving. A final score of 161 all out of 45overs was always going to be tough to defend but GPR got of to a great start when Kier Smith got the Finchley opener to edge a lightening delivery to first slip where Les Hall took a very sharp catch. There after GPR toiled a bit but managed to give themselves an outside chance of victory via some good spin bowling from Phil Goldstone and Gary Coombe. GPR looked good in the field and an excellent throw from skipper James Evans looked to have secured a run-out at a vital stage ... however the umpire wasn't quick enough to get into position to give it out!!
Special mention for skipper James Evans(18) who led and organised the team very well.
