Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Harlow on Sat 26 Jul 2003 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 4 Wickets
Match report
Last week the Saffron Walden captain said that Harlow were a much improved side from earlier in the season so with only 4 regular 3rd eleven batsmen in the side, it was crucial that if we won the toss and fielded we didn't give ourselves too much to do. We won the toss and did the obvious thing - fielded. Wickets were hard to come by despite their opener edging behind off Paul Winmill in the 3rd over but runs were equally difficult to score in the face of tight line bowling from Paul and Bruce (yes, out of retirement again!). After 20 overs Harlow were scoring at a rate of just over 2 and finally had to try and push things along. When opener Jones pulled Andy Jenner into the hands of Bruce at mid-wicket they were 65-3 with just over 20 overs to go. The introduction of Dave Cobill into the attack then turned things around! From the next 12 overs Harlow did manage to increase the scoring rate but more significantly they lost 3 wickets (all to Cobblers) and at 133-6 we were back on top. Despite the efforts of Green who batted well at No.6 for 44 (glad he didn't come in earlier) Jungle and Paul cleaned up the last 3 wickets for 14 runs and Harlow were all out for 147 off 45.4 overs.
Despite the loss of an early wicket, our reply was steady with Keith & Ron Montgomery pushing the score on to 69 until Keith was bowled for 28. Unfortunately when Danny Cox and Jungle were both bowled in the same over and Travis Hussain was caught and bowled 3 overs later 95-5 resembled a mini crisis considering my earlier fears regarding only having 4 specialist batsmen. John Roberts and Ron added another 25 until John became Opening bowler Staniford's 5th victim (great spell up the hill) and with the rain getting harder Ron and Colin Croft inched us ever closer and victory was achieved after 35.5 overs. Brilliant knock of 67 not out from Ron showing great concentration. Great contributions also from Colin, John Roberts and Travis all of who did their bit in keeping things going. Credit also to Harlow who stayed out in the rain as they could see a good chance of winning. Nearly there. Roll on Billericay.
