Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Hadleigh & Thundersley on Sat 28 Jun 2003 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
On reflection I think we would of bowled Hadleigh out even if we hadn't won the toss and fielded first. The only potential problem we may of had was would we get enough runs bearing in mind that we only had 3 regular 3rd eleven batsmen playing? Anyway Hadleigh only had 10 men and in the words of their captain were very weak. Faced with these facts it was important that we got them out as cheaply as possible and did not have to chase too big a score regardless of the fact that we were playing on another very flat one!
After the initial breakthrough made by the chairman having come out of retirement, we were able to play to the normal game plan of stifling the opposition and giving them nothing. The result was a steady procession of wickets in the face of some very mean bowling and eager fielding with Dave Cobill finishing top wicket taker with 4-13. Job done!
With 50 minutes to bat before tea and consequently all the time in the world to get the runs there shouldn't of been too many alarms but however we hadn't read the script! With Keith Wright walking across a straight one for 4, Andy D'Cruz chipping one to mid on for 1 and Danny Cox pulling a short one straight into the hands of an amazed backward square leg for 9, 30-3 suggested that things were not necessarily going to plan! Tea was taken at 4.30 and thankfully this worked in our favour as afterwards we did not lose another wicket and another victory was duly completed at 6 pm. Well done Chris Goldsmith who sensibly hung around with yours truly and contributed a valuable 31 not out to an unbeaten 4th wicket stand of 80. Once again though enormous credit to the bowlers and fielders and thanks to Bruce for playing as it is impossible to play home or away with only 3 bowlers!
We may be 36 points clear at the top of the league but until things are certain I see no reason to change the game plan and 2 wins are essential from our next 2 games away to Wickford and home to Westcliff.
A great day for the club with 4 wins and the points gained will duly fuel all our ambitions. However lets not lose sight of the fact that we achieved this against opposition that are bottom in 3 of the 4 leagues. In all honesty it is what we would expect.
Roll on Wickford.
