Wanstead v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 10 Aug 2002 at 11.30
Match was Drawn
Match report
A Hard Fought top of the table clash. Wanstead batted first on a slow pitch and although at first runs came at a reasonable pace the introduction of the slower bowlers saw the runs dry up. Park rattled through their overs bowling 47 at lunch with Wanstead on 109-1.First Russ Collard bowling 7 overs for only 9 runs then saw a fantastic spell of bowling from Andy and Mel who showed great control, working well as a unit.THe pair of them bowling 42 overs for 113 runs taking 9 wickets.Parks efforts in the field were superb making Wanstead battle for every run, special word for the efforts of Barry Hyam who was exceptional behind the stumps with a great catch and 2 top drawer stumpings leding by example and the rest of the side following that standard.Rory Ellison of Wanstead spoiled a bit of the hard work scoring an aggressive 26 not out and proving that runs could be scored if a positive mind acted. That extra 26 really proved to be the difference on the day and left Wanstead at 182.
Park lost Scott and Barry to be in trouble at 11-2 at tea.Andy and Russ pushed on after tea trying to be as positive as possible but with great bowling from the ever youthful Fayyaz life was made difficult. They both pushed Mo Akram out of the attack as they pushed on.Eventually Russ succomed to Fayyaz for for 31 and Andy followed a few overs later for 32.Whilst Richard fell to Akram Darren and Mel stod firm adding 43 to take Park to another bonus point and although Mel was out with 3 overs to go Darren and Luke saw Park home to a hard fought drawer with honours shared.
