Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Colchester & East Essex on Sat 21 Jun 2003 at 11.30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Winston takes control
A fantastic advertisement for the structure of league Premiership cricket.
Two good sides playing the game hard but openly, on a good wicket, 540 runs and 11 wickets, two hundreds , 7 balls to spare out of 120 overs.
Having been asked to bat Colchester soon had Ian Lanagan retiring with a wrist injury. On a flat road of a wicket Colchester scored steadily but never at any real pace. Ivulich and Hembry put on 70 before at last Leigh Davey made the break through bowling Ivulich for 45. Alan Croft bowled steadily and was rewarded with his patience by taking a caught and bowled to get rid of Hembry jus before lunch. Winnie Churchill toiled away creating needed presssure and with others operating around him from the other end the score was just ticking over but accumulating without any further wickets. With the longer game the skill of building innings and patience were being rewarded. Adam Seymour , ex Essex and Worcester began opening up and accelarated the rate. DE Grooth was finally dismissed by Hussain for 34 bowled and the boundaries started to c0ome as the rate increased at epic proportions of 8 an over.Seymour completed his hundred off the final ball of the 66 overs to leave Park with 268 to win from a minimum of 54 overs.
Park were soon in trouble when Anand was dismissed for 0 in the 3rd over. Barry Hyam was next out misjudging the pace off the wicket and skying a pull shot to square leg.
Leigh Davey and Winnie Churchill set about rebuilding with time and patience.Adding 72 off 25 overs before Davey was caught at mid off for 41.
With a minimum of 21 overs Park still needed 164 to win. Hussain and Churchill started to accelarate but Hussain fell to Edwards bowled for 26.
Enter the Diamond, sent in to try and launch a copuple of 6's which he repaid his captains faith in him at number 6 !!!!!!!!!!!!! Diamond launched a couple of boundaries before one sorte too many saw him caught on the line.
Park still needed 90 from the 9 nine remaining overs. With aggresive running and fine shot selection Winnie made it to his hundred a fine knock and one that shows when one player bats through a big run chase is possible.Needing 33 to win from 3 overs Collard decided that Winnies needed to rest his damaged groin and set about the bowling. With nine coming from the next over it left 23 to win from 2 overs as Seymour started his over. Collard launched the first to square leg for 4, the next went for 6 over cow corner. Winnies excitement amounted to tell the captain not to throw it away and try amnd play a more graceful shot through the off side as opposed to his favoured heave over cow. He responded to the Vices request and said now keep your head down just pick up whats left off the next 3 balls. Collard heaved the next over mid wicket for 6, Winnies eyes on stalks. Needing 2 to win Collard drove the next through the covers for 4. Winnies groins were saved and an amazing win.
A great team victory played with conviction and dedication. THe fielding was enthusiastic in the heat some vital runs were saved by the younger and occasionally by the older as all chipped in with there efforts.
A great game of cricket and one few will forget and it was fantastic to have the support of the other elevens who had already returned from their days quests.
Thanks guys for an all round team effort to be proud of and i hope one we all all learn from.
