Fives & Heronians v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 20 Jul 2002 at 11.30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Fives were putt in to bat on a difficult run scoring wicket. Park bowled with good discipline and were rewarded on a regular basis.Fine spells by all saw it difficult for Fives to score with any freedom .Collard and Montgomery first 14 overs saw the score to 2-28. Hussain captured the vital wickets of Mordrick caught by Adams at mid wicket and then Aussie Kim Beazleigh brillantly caught by James Redwood at short fine leg diving forward for 24.With inspirational help from team mates saw Ben Montgomery back in the attack and with Luke Sweeney reduced Fives to 107-9 at lunch Montgomery claiming 3-14 in a spell before lunch.Sweeney toiled away on a wicket offering more and more spin and was unlucky not to pick up better rewards.
Fives offered a chance straight after lunch off Monty but Park were unable to snatch it.Stubborn resistance for an 30 mins was put up but finally Sweeney got his reward bowling Clark.Fives finishing on 139.
All be it a small score it was never going to be easy and with fierce fight Fives put up a great battle. With the wicket getting more and more difficult concentration was to be the key.Park lost Davis 4 and Hyam 12 early and Churchill and Hussain set about steadying the ship.Hussain finally out caught by Fitzgerald for 22.Collard went cheaply and Batch joined Churchill for a defiant 30 run partnership.Batch out first ball after tea for 16, but Churchill carried on unfaized and completed a great 50 on a very difficult wicket.Park edged closer and closer but wickets fell consistently as Fives battled away. Finally a left hander Ian Adams entered the match and was to be a defiant point as it negated the spin of Beazleigh and the leg cutters of Ballard.Churchill and Adams added the final 19 runs for victory with Adams scoring 14 not out and Churchill finishing on a great 54.
