Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v HUTTON on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 1pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost lost by 4 wickets
Match report
With two of the last three matches to play against Hutton and Walthamstow, fellow clubs in the relegation zone, and starting the day 5 points ahead of Hutton, Park knew that a good display would go a long way towards dispelling any relegation fears. Everything was in their own hands. How ironic therefore that there was a collective off day in the field which meant that a highly defensible total of 228 was not defended, resulting in a 4 wicket defeat. Now it will all go down to the wire!
Park won the toss and batted on a pitch that held up remarkably well to overnight rain. Hutton's bowlers belied their low league position with good lines of attack and although they did not part Jas Chaggar or Jerry Trayler, they did keep the scoring in check. Nevertheless, an opening stand of 139 in 36 overs put Park well on the way to a decent total before the consistent Trayler was bowled atempting to drive for a thoroughly good 78 containing 13 fours and a six. Suki Jutla upped the pace and he and Chaggar took the total to 188 before the latter was out for 76 containing 12 boundaries and passing 600 runs for the season in the process, a fine effort. A final burst saw a total of 228 for 2 after 52 overs, Jutla finishing on 56 not out. It looked a decent score given the depth of the Park bowling to come. For Hutton all the bowlers stuck to their disciplines and were backed by good ground fielding.
The first over of the reply gave an idea of what unfortunately for Park was to come with four wides first ball and further boundaries to follow. With the exception of Andy Jenner who was consistency itself, and colin jones, the bowlers did not put the ball in the right areas or on the right lines or indeed lengths, too often pitching short to players who were notably more comfortable on the back foot than on the front foot. Jenner made an early break through by bowling Gareth O'Dell but John Harris and David Sedana took full toll of the erratic attack with what proved to be the match winning foundation, despite skipper Jenner juggling with the bowling. The introduction of Colin Jones' medium pace produced a longed for wicket as he bowled Harris for 62, and Ravi Rajani had Sedana well held at mid off by Adam McKie for 45, but only 68 were needed off 20 overs at this stage, and after the returning Jenner opened with a maiden over at the start of an excellent steady and controlling spell, the next over went for 19 and a last ball wicket to make the equation very simple - Hutton needed 49 off 18 overs and Park needed 5 wickets. Jones and Jenner did their utmost to apply pressure and the runs dried up but the experience Nick Watson held firm at one end and 20 were needed when he was out, Harry O'dell and Rob Swanton seeing Hutton home with four overs to spare. The one consolation for Park was a good haul of points (but not win points!) from the game, so that at least the result leaves Hutton only three points ahead of Park, and all to play for!. Hopefully we will not be so prodigal with our bowling in the final two matches.
