Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v SOUTH WOODFORD on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 68 runs
Match report
A welcome win for Park as the home team comprehensively outplayed opponents who at the start of the day were 3rd and on an excellent run of results. Skipper andy Jenner won the toss and chose to bat first on an excellent pitch at Gallows Corner with a lightening fast outfield.Jas Chaggar and Jerry Trayler proceeded to vindicate the decision with a stand of 57 in 14 overs before Jerry was run out after a calling mix up. Thereafter the innings was a series of partnerships - 38 for the second wicket, 45 for the fourth wicket and so on. Jas batted beautifully and was in no apparent trouble for a fine 62 against some promising seam bowling from the south woodford younsters.Sat Chaggar, playing his first league match for 5 weeks, added 23 and Dave Pasola hit eight fours in 36 for an excellent injection in the middle order. The tail wagged and a final score of 223, although below par on the face of it, was a sufficiently challenging total if the Park bowlers could put the ball in the right place. For south woodford, ahmed took 2 for 39 and Indica 3 for 38 and Abraham 3 for 55.
Andy Jenner started with two tight overs and proved difficult to get away in his opening spell of 7 overs, and although Nick ford was a little rusty after four weeks out, the game really changed with the introduction of Dave Cobill's left arm spin. He took a sharp caught and bowled to get rid of Little for 29 and there was a run out very quickly afterwards when a dropped catch off Cobbs bowling was reclaimed and thrown in. Jenner followed up by clean bowling the number 4 batsman and South were 55 for 3. As the bowlers stuck to their disciplines the batsmen found it difficult to get the ball away, and Colin Jones had just reward for a steady spell with an LBW victim. Cobbs bowled in harness with Durham Bhogal and proceeded to knock down the middle order with three caught and one bowled, durham claiming another. With 7 overs available at the last pair (rtwo young players who batted very correctly) it got down to 8 balls to spare when Cobbs induced Malin to play a false shot and bowl him for a fine 31 and thereby win the match for Park - a 20 pointer as they had batted first. Cobblers final figures were 17.4 overs, 5 maidens, 6 for 61 - and coupled with that he had hit a rare 6 when batting so he completed an excellent day for himself and the team.
All round this was a encouraging display by Park with contributions from the whole team. One or two injury niggles surfaced, and holidays will now take their toll , but the spirit is good. Next week it is high riding Wanstead, a tough proposition on their own pitch, but against whom we obtained a creditable draw earlier in the season.
