HAINAULT & CLAYHALL v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 22 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
After winning the toss and electing to field on a sunny afternoon at 1.05pm at Clayhall Park, Park found a complete change in conditions at 1.30pm when the match started with overcast skies and a very strong breeze and intermittent light showers. Not that this affected the pitch which was a curious dry colour with some uneven bounce and gave little assistance to the bowlers (apart from the occasional ball popping) and was too slow for the batsmen. The home club face a local authority water ban from 1 august and are rightly concerned about the impact on the pitch after that date. what it did do was afect the bowling as strong gusts made control awkward. The in form Hainault openers made a fast start and did not miss a bad ball, with 48 on the board after 8 overs, so an early change saw the introduction of the slow bowlers, Durham Bhogal and Dave Cobill. In the next ten overs only 15 runs were added and although the openers were not parted - indeed they did not offer a chance - the runs were kept in check. Mike O'Kelly was the first to go, LBW, and a second wicket soon followed but the key stand was for the fourth wicket as Nick Whitehead hit a string of boundaries to post a fine century and take the score over 200. A late flurry of wickets and runs saw Whitehead reach the declaration with 132 not out from a score of 242 for 6. Durham bowled really well for figures of 3 for 90 off 21 overs and was well supported by Cobblers with 1 for 63 and Suki Jutla who again showed promise with 2 for 58. Despite being unable to bowl, Dave Stuckey's fielding was top quality and the ovevrall Park effort in the field was good.
Despite the nature of the wicket the score was very gettable as the outfield was very fast and much depended on the start Park could make. Jas Chaggar and Jerry Trayler made a confident opening but with the score on 38 Jas got one that popped and was well held at slip. Lee Carter joined Jerry and they added 87 to take the game into the last 20 overs. They were held up by a fine spell from of left arm seam from Don Triggs who used the increasingly uneven surface well and was difficult to get away. Jerry was out accelerating the score for a well made 66 and as the run rate climbed Lee fell one short of his 50. Thereafter there were some lusty blows but the match petered out into an honours even draw, Dave Pasola making 17 not out at the death. In fact the pitch was the main winner as only Whitehead really mastered it during the game and he as the difference in the teams.
The fourth team effort cannot be faulted at the moment and it will not be long before draws are turned into wins provided availability remains good.
