BRENTWOOD v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost
Match report
I suppose that one has days like this but thankfully very rarely and in the captain's experience never! To lose massively by eight wickets on a blameless pitch, against a moderate bowling attack and on a sunny day takes some doing but the 4ths found a route nevertheless. Losing the toss and being asked to bat should have held no terrors especially as Brentwood (last season's 4thXI champions) have been struggling this year. The Park batting had a very solid look to it compared to most weeks this year, but soon lost an early wicket when Steve McCormack was well held off a firm drive. 7 for 1 became 25 for 2 when Sat Chaggar, who looked really at ease, mistimed a pull shot and was caught, to be quickly followed by Marc Lloyd at mid on caught driving and Dave Pasola in the same position and from an identical shot. For a while Jas chaggar and Ravi Rajani stabilised things and were looking comfortable when a calling mix up resulted in Jas being run out. Durham quickly followed. John Windebank did not last long; this was a real procession but the bowlers must have been as surprised as anyone because there was nothing in the pitch to give them any encouragement at all. Ravi was caught for a well made 33 to make it 76 for 8 but Anil and Jungle looked solid and made progress towards the batting points zone before another running mix up (captain's fault!) seperated them. A final score of 114 all out was about half a par score! for Brentwood Mick Payne had impressive figures of 20 overs 8 maidens 5 for 44, drifting the ball ever so slightly at slow medium pace.
The total was not defensible but Park set about getting something from the game. The old ball accounted for one opener through a well taken catch in the gully by Steve McCormack, and Dave Pasola threw down the bolwer's stumps with a direct hit to brilliantly run ot the other opener. Enter the experienced David Childs to join his son Tom at the crease. He played a very controlled innings, severe on anything off line, and would have been a key wicket. An accurate spell from Andy Jenner exerted some pressure and eventually drew a rash shot from David but the edge was parried in the slips, lobbed up, and dropped at the second attempt; chance gone and thereafter there was not a hint of a wicket. David finished 43 not out and tom 44 not out.
Zero points from a match is hard to take and everyone will take stock in the week to ensure there is no repeat next Saturday!
