HORNCHURCH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 runs
Match report
The World Cup certainly has a lot to answer for and with players dropping out like flies all week the Park team that was fielded contained seven of the originally selected 4th XI. On a blisteringly hot afternoon losing the toss and being asked to bat was in fact a result in itself on a ground (Fielders Sports, the old Brittanic Lodge ground) which is traditionally hard to defend because of the size (small) and slopes all around the square to the boundary, allowing the ball to run away and gather speed. Jas Chaggar and Tom Montgomery revelled in their opeing partnership with their sound defence and ability to find the gaps when presented with a loose ball. The bowlers toiled, the field was spread around the boundary, and the partnership was woth 124 before Tom edged to slip off Lol Mason, who had just started on what was to prove a long spell. Tom hit 8 fours in his 54, and Jas 13 fours in his 73. For a while youngsters Waleed Wain and Adam McKie found scoring difficult but the terrific start had set a platform whcih was ultimately exploited as Waleed opened out and hit 6 fours and three sixes in a promising 58, very robustly supported by Chris Webber (back from his round the world travels!) smashing 42 very quickly indeed. Mason picked up 4 for 67 in 15 overs but the over rate was badly affected by lost balls or searching for the ball in the undergrowth surrounding the ground (in fact this affected. A final score of 274 was a top effort and one that gave leeway when the World Cup impacted again (more of that later).
Starting with the old ball paid immediate dividends when Durham Bhogal bowled Ben Spray for 0 and followed up by getting Hodgkiss out the same way shortly afterwards to put the home team 38 for 2. Skipper Dan Simpson was in excellent form however with a string of off drives and clips to leg and raced to 50 with help from AJ Du Plooy. Both were missed off the new ball but just before the 20 overs there were two more wickets to leave the home team around 110 for 4. Drinks were taken and talk of penalties and football permeated the air as fielders took their eye off the ball almost literally as for half an hour the fielding disintegrated and the batsmen hit more and more boundaries. All at once Hornchurch were in with a shout but at last, after an excellent 123, Simpson holed out to cover and then the fun startd as batsmen went for it, fielders smartened up and bowlers found length and line, very well led by Koos Meinjtes in his second spell with a terrific display of medium paced bowling. Suddenly the equation was 21 off 3 overs with two wickets in hand, soon to be one wicket and 11 needed off the last over. Sensible field placing made it difficult for the batsmen and a cool pick up and throw by Waleed ran out the last pair six short of the Park total. Koos finished with 5 for 60 off 13 overs. Phew!! Both sides could reflect on what might have been (a bit like the World Cup again) but this was a good advert for 3rd XI cricket and also for the qualities of the Park 4th Xi players who took part.
