Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v SAFFRON WALDEN on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 11am
Match was Drawn Draw - 9 points
Match report
GP&R lost the toss and Saffron inserted GP&R. This soon seemed to be the right decision as both Shah and Tarr failed to score leaving GP&R at 0 for 2. Churchill and Swainland then put together a partnership of 45, before Swainland was out LBW. Then a fine partnership of 86 between Churchill and Filmalter got the score up to 131 for 4 in 37 overs. Steady progress, was made but wickets fell, leaving Park at 178 for 8 in 54 overs. It was then a fine partnership of 37 between Goldstone and Rees which enabled Park to reach to 200 and pass the third bonus point at 210. Park were finally all out for a hard earnt 226 in the last over of their 66. Rees made a very fine and important 31.
Park knew they needed a fine performance in the field as the pitch flattened out and became easier to bat on. For the first 33 overs, Saffron made steady progress to pass the 100 with only the loss of 1 wicket to Filmalter. However, Park kept at their task and even with a couple of dropped catches, it was Filmalter who removed George and Ecclestone to a fine catch by Swainland to leave Saffon at 133 for 3. He then gained his 4th to another fine catch, this time from Shah and Park had swung the pendalum in their favour with 2 new bats at the crease and the score at 134 for 4. Saffron needed a further 93 runs from the final 17 overs. Although the 5th wicket parnership brought 36 runs, Park kept at their task and the run rate kept increasing. This brought pressure on Saffron and through a wicket by Berry and then 2 by Churchill in his final over, Saffron were at 192 for 7 off 50 overs. This pressure was kept up and Saffron had to play some big shots, which enabled Berry to catch Smith in the deep with an excellent effort and this brought Filmalter a deserved 5th wicket. Saffron then gave up the chase and although Goldstone had 2 close LBW calls in the final over, Park could not force a win.
