Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v UPMINSTER 6TH on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1PM

Match report
Despite all the recent rain the pitch at Old Chigwellians was in good shape for this derby clash, if damp and slow at the start and drying out later. Both sides fielded plenty of younsters in their sides, and Upminster won the toss and elected to field first and a young attack bowled well, as scoring proved slow going in the conditions. Both Sampath Gamvasam and Mughir Quereshi played straight and the score crept forward and after 26 overs the score was 70 for 1, Mughir having gone to a smart catch for 25. 40 were added for the 2nd wicket before James Perera was run out from a direct hit and then George Rogers injected somee acceleration with a well made 26 as the conditions improved. Anchor man Sampath fell for an excellent 58 laying the platfrom for a final score of 176 for 7 off 52 overs. The Upminster fielding was good and the bowlers perfomed well , in particular Will Bottoms with 4 for 20 off 12 overs, but their slow over rate meant that they completed 52 overs at 4.35, leaving only 65 minutes and 20 overs for the second innings. Andy Jenner quickly broke the opening pair and kept close set fields which helped keep the game on the move. Ollie Heazell played very well for 31 before trying his arm once too often, and having been missed at mid off he went the next over caught in the same position. Mike Larke proceeded to bat positively on a by now benign pitch and 108 were needed in the last hour with 8 wickets in hand. Arun Kullar made the breakthrough with his leg spin, having O'dowd caught for 22, and a further wicket fell before Larke and Phil Hammond looked to be winning the game for the visitors. The returning Jenner and Liam Neal put a break on things, Hammond went to a well judged catch by Mughir Quereshi off Neal who then succeded again with another good catch by Danny long. In tense finale Larke, having been pinned down, was bowled going for a big hit off Neal, and 15 were needed off the last over with two wickets to fall. Upminster kept at it but then inexplicably left two deliveries to put the win beyond them, only for a catch to be held off the last ball of the game as Upminster fell 11 short and the game was drawn. Liam Neal finished with his first 5fer in senior cricket, with 11 overs 5 for 47, thoroughly well deserved. Park managed to get through 42 overs in the time left for the second innings and came close to the win as both sides played for the win, so all round it was an excellent game played in excellent spirit by both teams.
