SOUTH WOODFORD 5TH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
Hainault Rec is an awkward ground with very grassy pitches prodcing odd bounce and very short boundaries where it is usually 1 or 4. South Woodford won the toss and batted and lost a wicket in the first over when Andy Jenner extracted some extravagant bounce from the pitch. Thereafter it was very hard work for the batsmen as the bowlers kept on top, a second wicket falling and then in a great spell by Rahem Ali Khan of 4 for 10 the middle order disappeared. As the pitch lost some of its venom and a young Park side relaxed, the experienced Iqbal produced a very well controlled innings along with the more robust Kent and they gradually hauled the score over the 100 mark. Once Iqbal was removed by a good piece of bowling from ian Greenwood for an xcellent 55 (5 fours, 3 sixes) the remaining order did not last long as with the help of some reliable catching Greenwood and the eturning Jenner finished the innings at 149, Kent being last out for 34 (7 fours). Jenner took 4 for 17, Greenwood 2 for 37, and everyone chipped in in the field. The Park reply added 57 quickly as some erratic bowling was punished by Connor Donnelly and Ian Greenwood. Connor played an assured innings with 11 fours before receiving one that bounced on him from a steady spell from Iqbal (the pitch was still producing erratic bounce) having added 92 for the first wicket, Ian making 29 and being undone by a shooter. Although two more wickets fell to a promising spell of leg spin from Overton (3 for 55) the result was never in doubt and Graham Poultney sealed a 6 wicket win with a six. An awkward ground and an awkward game for the young players requiring plenty of concentration in the field and when batting, another part of their learning curve. Another match played in very good spirit by both sides!
