Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v WEST ESSEX 4TH on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 59 runs
Match report
This was a quite remarkable game for young Park side to experience. After heavy overnight rain and in drying conditions as the day grew warmer, the decision at the toss to bowl first was a formality and division leaders West Essex duly won the toss and bowled. They had immediate success through the experienced Graham Eversden who finished the day bowling a marathon spell of medium pace of 26 overs 13 maidens 5 wickets for 28 runs. He was very accurate and made the batsmen play and duly reaped a proper reward for his efforts, and the pressure on the Park team helped the bowlers at the other end, the batting exception being Connor Donnelly with 22 before he was run out in a mix up. At 56 for 8 off 36 overs (very difficult batting conditions!) skipper Andy Jenner joined U16 Liam Neal and together they added 52 with solid defence and atrition of runs, using up time and frustrating the attack such that when the innings closed for 114 (Liam a very well played 32, Jenner an experienced 13)off 63 overs there was a competitive total in the conditions to bowl at, albeit the pitch was playing a lot easier by now. When West Essex replied they lost a wicket in the second over from debutant George Kiernan as a short ball was spooned to cover. Skipper Jenner quickly introduced Ian Greenwood's spin to the attack as by now it was turning, and after an excellent delivery from Kiernan forced the batsman to play on, Greenwood took control with his accuracy. He was joined by Liam Neal who bowled with good control and the West batsmen failed to take heed of what the pitch was doing and three catches were quickly held. 41 for 2 became 44 for 6 and 48 for 9 as Greenwood weaved his spell and the final wicket fell before the start of the last hour, all out 55 off 19 overs. Ian took 5 for 10 off 7.2 overs and Liam 3 for 5 off 4 overs to complete a great game for himself. A young Park team emerged with a lot of credit in what was a low scoring but exciting match where the tables turned on more than one occasion, and as with other games in this division so far this year the match was played in excellent spirit by both sides. Well played!
