Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v BASILDON & PITSEA 4TH on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1PM
Match was Drawn
Match report
Playing on the astro at Old Brentwoods ground (another very good pitch for lower teams, with some bounce and carry and consistency - why don't more clubs use them?)Park won the toss and took first innings. Ian Greenwood was severe on anything that erred from the opening bowlers and 40 was on the board before a mix up saw a run out and the first wicket. The visitors tightened their lines after this and three more wickets fell to make it 65 for 4, but an excellent innings from colt George Rogers, playing straight and sensibly, led the recovery. Some firm blows by John Roberts moved the field back and then some intelligent running ensured a stand at good pace. The pair added 115 for the 5th wicket before both fell in quick succession but a declaration at 213 for 7 ensured a par score. George hit 9 fours in his well played 75 and John 5 fours in his equaly well played 44. For Basildon Rick Smith took 3 for 57 in an overall steady bowling attack. Catches win matches they say and two missed straightforward chances in the first three overs cost Park dear as the openers put on 50 for the first wicket in good time. At the start of the 20 overs the score was 100 for 1, 113 needed with 9 wickets in hand, but Ian Greenwood made the breakthrough through a catch at mid off by John Roberts in a lengthy and intelligent spell of spin, and Andy Jenner returned to the attack to remove opener Steve Healey who made a very good 73. Despite three more missed chances which would have put Park ahead of the game, Greenwood struck twice more to put the game in the balance, 40 needed off 5 overs with 5 wickets in hand for the visitors, and it was all action from there! Three overs left and now 7 down and needing 22 the Basildon side kept after the win; another missed catch, four needed off the last ball, but only three ensued so a scores level draw! Terrific match, exciting finish, lessons to be learned from dropped catches and maintaining concentration, well played everyone.
