Gidea Park & Romford won by 50 runs
A call late on Friday evening from the Rainham U11s Manager sparked a flurry of phone calls which eventually saw an inexperienced GP&R side take-on a mix of Rainham and GP&R players in a friendly at Gallows Corner. As of 21:30 on Friday evening Rainham had just 5 players available and were reluctantly calling to cancel the fixture. However, with both clubs keen to play a game of some description, we agreed to ‘top-up’ the Rainham team with some of the experienced GP&R players who had been stood down for the weekend. So thanks are due to Charlie Haddon, Patrick Dalton, Colm McNulty and Elliot Ross for giving up their lie in to become our opponents for the day.
Another hot Sunday morning at Gallows Corner saw the toss between captains George Seager (now of GP&R but captain of Rainham on the day - don’t ask, it’s too complicated!) and Alex Gough-Cooper end in the usual fashion with GP&R losing (that must be 5 in a row now) and, this time, being asked to bat first.
Opener James got the Park innings off to a decent start with 6 not out and although a few wickets fell the total was helped along by a very high extras count (thanks in no small part to a couple of bizarre overs from Patrick – 27 runs conceded without a single run off of the bat - amazing!) with over 70 runs being added to the home total. The middle and lower order saw not out contributions from Taylor, Asad, Elliot, Finlay, and Tommy and a final score of 324-7, for a healthy net score of 289.
In reply the Rainham openers struggled against a very accurate opening four overs from Asad and Tommy which saw just 1 run off of the bat and 3 wickets falling (Asad x 1, Tommy x1 and a run out). Rainham’s second pair (made up of GP&R players Patrick & Colm) also found the going tough, both being bowled by Taylor in another accurate 2 over spell. Alex got into the act against the 3rd pair of batsmen bowling the Rainham number 6 and the game was already over as a contest. Rainham’s fourth pair (made up of GP&R players Charlie Haddon and Elliot Ross) managed to score a few runs but some crazy running by Charlie saw him run out twice by some decent Park fielding. Another wicket for Asad and 1 for Zak, courtesy of a great catch from James, against the 5th and final pair saw Rainham’s innings close on 289-10, for a net score of 239.
So our current ‘hot streak’ of form continued with a comfortable 50 run victory. There were a number of positives to take out of the game, particularly when you consider the relative inexperience of the players involved, with I think the highlight being the fantastic attitude and team spirit shown in the field. The players were genuinely supportive of each other and really seemed to enjoy themselves, which was great. A couple of players were making their competitive debuts, so congrats to Matthew Dye and Elliot Brown for their contributions. In addition to the batting and bowling highlights noted above we’ve gone another game without dropping a catch, thanks to James ‘stinger’ at short extra cover, and if we can continue to cut down on the extras which we give away then we should continue to be hard to beat. Man of the match was a close run thing, with Asad’s bowling (3 overs for 3 runs with 2 wickets) just pipping James and Tommy’s excellent all round contributions and Alex’s tight and accurate bowling.
We have a good mix of games coming up over the next few weeks, see below, so there will be an opportunity to play most of the squad at some point. As normal the onus is on the players to get themselves along to training and to work hard to ‘catch the coach’s eye’.
