Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 11's v Upminster C on Sun 20 Jun 2010 at 9:30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won by 23 runs
Match report
Havering League - 20 over 'Terriers'
Upminster 'C' 273-6, 243 net
Gidea Park & Romford 296-6, 266 net
Gidea Park & Romford won by 23 runs
On a cold grey morning at Gallows Corner our captain for the day George Earle lost the toss and Upminster decided to bat first. GP&R again got off to a good start with opening bowlers Charlie Haddon and Taylor Reece both taking a wicket in their first over. With Charlie following up with a further wicket in his second over Upminster’s innings was in early trouble despite stubborn resistance from the straight bat of their skipper Ewan Green. With our follow up bowlers George Tewkesbury and Alex Cooper both bowling maidens in their first overs, Alex’s over including a wicket from his first ball in competitive cricket, ‘Park’ were keeping up the pressure on Upminster with very few runs coming off of the bat. The bowling started to slip a little with the number of wides and byes creeping up until George E. bowled a couple of tidy overs in tandem with Colm McNulty who showed the rest of the team how to bowl straight, bowling 2 maidens the first of which being a wicket maiden. With Noor Ahmad taking a wicket in the last over of the innings Upminster finished on 273-6, for a net score of 243.
With just 26 runs scored off of the bat this innings was a great example of how much we continue to help the opposition out each week by giving away so many extras. That said the extras tally of 47 was the first time we have given away less than 50 this season so perhaps things are moving in the right direction!?
The GP&R innings got off to a great start with George E. looking back to his classy best (13 not out) and Charlie (4 not out) batting solidly first up. With further not out contributions from Lauren Earle (2 not out and still recovering from having been woken up by our 09:30 SOS call), Patrick Dalton (11 not out) and Alex (4 not out) ‘Park‘ were soon ahead of the Upminster score and looking set for a comfortable win. However with each of the last 4 batsmen all getting out at least once ‘Park’ kept the game interesting before eventually running out comfortable winners, closing on 296-6 for a net score of 266 and a 23 run winning margin. Colm was named man of the match for (probably) being the first GP&R U11 bowler to complete a 2 over bowling spell without bowling a wide this season!
So our yo-yo run of form continues with heavy defeats alternating with comfortable wins. The positives to take out of this game were the improved attitude shown by everyone in the field, the excellent catching (it’s been a few weeks now since we dropped a chance) and the running between the wickets which was much better than in previous weeks. If we can continue to work on cutting down the number of extras that we give away and cut out the odd silly shot (yes Noor and Elliot that’s you!) then we should be hard to beat.
Another home league game next week (vs. Ardleigh Green) and then some fun at the Loughton Kwik Cricket Festival on 4th July. Team selection and match arrangements for Sunday will be confirmed at Friday’s coaching session.
