Rayleigh v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 11's on Sun 23 May 2010 at 9:30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost by 165 runs

Match report GP&R CC 248-11, net 193
Rayleigh CC 368-2, net 358
Rayleigh won by 165 runs (yes that’s not a typo, by 165 runs!)

With the trip to Rayleigh being the only friendly between now and early July we took the chance to try a bit of squad rotation to give some new faces a run out in a match situation. Unfortunately the plan to play against a mixture of Rayleigh’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams was scuppered when Rayleigh’s ‘B’ team had to play a league game, so our inexperienced side ended up taking on Rayleigh’s ‘A’ team.

Rayleigh won the toss and asked us to bat and after losing a number of early wickets to some quick and accurate bowling GP&R’s total never made it back above the 200 run start point, eventually finishing in negative territory on a net score of 193. Amongst the carnage of flying stumps and bails (9 of the 11 wickets were clean bowled) there were some good batting performances from George Earle, Joel Mundy and Elliot Ross who all played solidly to finish ‘not out’.

Unfortunately, Rayleigh then batted as well as they had bowled, with all of their batsmen scoring freely against our bowling. We again bowled far too many wides (contributing over 50 to the opposition total for the second week running) and Rayleigh were able to run up a very impressive net total of 358 for a massive 165 run victory. George Earle was the stand out bowler with two very accurate overs and there were wickets for Sam Hall (caught by Elliot Ross) and Joel Mundy with a very good caught and bowled.

All in all a tough introduction for some of our rookies against a very impressive Rayleigh side who were perhaps the best side that I have seen in 4 years of watching under U11 cricket. Despite the hammering, our side kept going well, staying enthusiastic and energetic to the end in the baking hot conditions.

Feedback to Carl will (again) focus on the number of wides which we bowled and the need to sharpen up our running between the wickets (the players could all learn from Lauren Earle here as her calling and running between the wickets was excellent). We also dropped some simple catches and had a few fielders who decided to take a ramble around the Essex countryside (wandering away from where they were supposed to be fielding).

I think that it’s our turn in the nets this coming Friday, so everyone will have the chance to focus on bowling accurately in controlled conditions and we’ll also work on backing up and running between the wickets while we are in the nets.

We now have a run of 5 consecutive home league games starting with Goresbrook this Sunday (30th). As normal team selection and match details will be confirmed at Friday’s coaching session.

Finally, to end on a positive note, good luck to Patrick Dalton, Charles Herold and Elliot Ross who have all been invited to Essex CCC’s Metropolitan District trials this Monday (24th) at Walthamstow CC.
