Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 11's v Hornchurch Athletic on Sun 16 May 2010 at 9:30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost by 6 runs
Match report
HACC 291-5, net score 266
GP&R 285-5, net score 260
HACC won by 6 runs
The U11s Havering League campaign finally got underway as we welcomed Hornchurch Athletic CC to Gallows Corner on what turned out to be another damp and cold Sunday morning. Captain for the day Charlie Haddon won the toss and asked HACC to bat first partly because with rain forecast he wanted HACC to have the disadvantage of bowling second with a wet ball but mainly because he wanted to skip off early to watch the Daggers in the play offs!
While all of our bowlers managed to restrict HACC’s batsmen scoring with the bat a steady stream of wides proved very costly as GP&R contributed over 50 runs to their opponent’s total. HACC ended on 291-5 for a net score of 266. Highlights of the GP&R bowling effort were a couple of caught and bowled victims for Patrick Dalton and the first competitive wicket for James Brett. The real highlight however was the way we fielded as a team, with some excellent ground fielding, good backing-up and lots of support and encouragement for each other.
At the half-way point all was looking good, we were starting to look like a proper cricket team and had a moderate score to chase down……….
Unfortunately, in reply our batting was labored with only our pair of Charlies (Haddon and Herold) really making any impression with some clean striking. So in a tense finish although we lost the same number of wickets as the opposition (5) and scored more runs off of the bat than they had we eventually came up 6 runs short as HACC had bowled far fewer wides.
Despite the disappointing result (we had lost a game which we probably should have won) it was really encouraging to see the team starting to take shape and looking so professional in the field.
Feedback to Carl will focus on the need to cut out the wides when we bowl (as we can’t afford to be the opposition’s top scorer each week!) and to learn to work the ball around for 1s or 2s when we are batting (rather than trying to smash the cover off of every ball faced!).
Next up is a friendly vs Rayleigh – details to follow at this Friday’s coaching session.
